  A new mobile dental health clinic will be at Dana Elementary School in Nipomo on Thursday as part of an effort to provide school-based oral health education and prevention for first- through third-graders.

  The program — called “Brush! Brush! Brush!” — is sponsored by the Community Health Centers of the Central Coast. Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, will attend. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at the school at 920 W. Tefft St.

  The clinic will allow CHC to provide oral health education, dental cleanings, fluoride varnishes and sealants to more than 1,600 additional uninsured and low-income children in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, according to a news release from Capps.

  Overnight lane closures slated for Highway 101 in Nipomo

  Nighttime construction work along a stretch of Highway 101 at the Willow Road interchange in Nipomo will start Tuesday and run through April 19 as crews remove a detour in the center median.

  The No. 1 lanes in both directions of the freeway will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., weather permitting, according to a Caltrans news release.

  The work is part of a project to extend Willow Road from Hetrick Avenue to Thompson Road. Construction is expected to be completed late this year.

  A group of San Luis Obispo County’s best and brightest leaders have been selected as this year’s Top 20 Under 40 award winners.

  Now in its seventh year, The Tribune’s competition honors the accomplishments and achievements of young women and men under the age of 40 who have demonstrated excellence in their professions and commitment to community service. To be eligible, nominees must have lived and worked in San Luis Obispo County year-round.

  More than 100 entries were submitted online at www.sanluisobispo.com, and a review panel from the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation selected the winners at The Tribune’s request.

  A collaborative project between the Community Counseling Center of San Luis Obispo County and Transitions Mental Health Association will provide free counseling and therapy to people living with severe mental illness in San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande.

  Therapists will be available to assist clients at two wellness centers run by Transitions Mental Health in those cities.

  Until now counseling wasn’t offered among the other programs offered at the centers, such as peer and support groups, and job and housing assistance.

  Community Health Centers of the Central Coast receives grant

  Community Health Centers of the Central Coast has been awarded a three-year grant that will allow it to improve the medical care it delivers to Medicare recipients and other patients in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

  The award, called an advanced primary care demonstration grant, comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funding was made available by the health reform law, the Affordable Care Act.

  Such grants are designed “to combat the explosive growth in health care costs by improving the quality and coordination of health care services,” according to Rep. Lois Capps, the Santa Barbara-based Democrat who represents coastal San Luis Obispo County.
