Community Health Centers of the Central Coast has broken ground on its $7.5 million medical clinic in Nipomo.
The nonprofit organization received approval from the San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission in October to construct a 28,000-square-foot health center on a 4.5-acre lot at 150 N. Tejas Place.
Construction is set to start this month and be completed in September, according to a news release.
An existing clinic on the site will be converted to administrative offices.
In a previous interview, Community Health Centers CEO Ron Castle said the project would provide 100 construction jobs for a year as it is built, and later will allow CHC to expand pediatric, dental, obstetrics, gynecological and other services. It would be open six days a week.
Money for the project comes from a grant under the federal health care reform package approved by Congress, the Affordable Care Act.
A 45-minute program during a Friday ceremony highlighted the new facility and its potential impact to Nipomo and the surrounding community.
Those on hand included state Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian, R-San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Paul Teixeira, and representatives from the offices of state Sen. Sam Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo and U.S. Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara.
CHC has 25 clinics in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties and contracts with the county to provide health services to low-income residents.
