Santa Maria men hurt in Nipomo, San Luis Obispo car crashes

Two Santa Maria men were hurt in separate alcohol-related car crashes in San Luis Obispo County on Saturday, the California Highway Patrol reported on Sunday.

In the first crash, about 5 a.m., a 2004 Honda driven by Edward Michael Hernandez, 24, drifted off the side of the road along northbound Highway 101 south of Higuera Street near San Luis Obispo, according to a CHP press release.

Hernandez crashed the Honda into a large tree and had to be removed from the car using the Jaws of Life because he was trapped, the CHP said.

He was being treated at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo for a brain contusion, a broken neck, a lung contusion, broken ribs, a detached thumb and cuts to his forehead, according to the CHP.

Hernandez faces drunken driving charges, the CHP said.

In the second crash, about 5:20 p.m., a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado went off the side of the road along North Oakglen Avenue, off of Tefft Street, in Nipomo, according to another CHP news release.

Trying to get back on the road, the driver over-corrected and lost control of the truck, crashing it into a tree, the CHP said.

The driver, a 37-year-old man, was ejected from the truck. The CHP would not disclose his name.

His pickup caught fire, but several bystanders dragged the driver away. He was treated at Marian Medical Center for major injuries, according to the CHP.

Officers suspect that alcohol was also involved in that crash.
