Led by seniors Ryan DesRoches and Boris Novachkov, the Cal Poly wrestling team defeated Arizona State 26-11 in its final home dual of the year Friday.
Novachkov improved to 24-2 and solidified his No. 2 national ranking at 141 pounds with an 11-0 major decision against Nathan Hoffer.
The two-time Pac-12 champion and NCAA All-American earned his fourth shutout of the season as well as his third major decision in the past three weeks.
After a scoreless first period, Novachkov erupted for eight points in the second round, scoring an escape, takedown, two-point near fall and three-point near fall for an 8-0 lead and finalizing the win with a takedown and riding time in the final period.
DesRoches opened the dual meet with a 5-3 decision over Eric Starks at 174 pounds. The nations fourth-ranked 174-pounder jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first period with a pair of takedowns and held on for his 22nd victory in 23 matches this season.
Fellow senior Ryan Smith (197 pounds) defeated Chace Eskam in a 15-5 major decision, and Kelan Bragg (285), also a senior, scored a 6-1 decision over Michael Hawkins.
Also winning for the Mustangs were Britain Longmire (125), Gianpier Yanez (157) and Dominic Kastl (165).
WOMENS TENNIS
Cal Poly 7, Santa Cruz 0
The Mustangs, making their home debut, did not yield a single set for the match, and stretched their homecourt win streak to nine since the start of last spring.
The No. 1 Cal Poly doubles duo of junior Alexa Lee and senior Jocelyn Davis defeated Alexandra Scotten and Laura Wade 8-3. In other doubles action, Cal Poly sophomores Gabrielle Gatewood and Jen Cornea dropped UC Santa Cruzs Sarah Malone and Courtney Lymburner 8-2 before freshman Ireen Kuiper and sophomore Ane McPike swept Rebecca Parker and Anya Sophie Lundberg 8-0 for the Mustangs.
In singles, Lee, Cornea, Davis, Gatewood, Kathryn Web and McPike all won in straight sets.
MENS TENNIS
Pepperdine 4, Cal Poly 0
The Mustangs (0-3) were shut out by the Waves (2-0) at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Malibu.
Cal Polys Brian McPhee and Jordan Bridge were defeated 8-2 in their doubles match. Sebastian Bell and Jurgen De Jeager also lost 8-1 in doubles.
In singles, Cal Polys McPhee and Marco Camuzzo lost.
Cal Poly will either face BYU or Vanderbilt in a consolation match today.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Hasay part of winning relay
Mission Prep graduate and Oregon junior Jordan Hasay ran the anchor leg on the womens distance medley relay team that won at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge at College Station, Texas.
Hasay ran the 1,600 leg on the distance medley relay (1,200-400-800-1,600) that finished in 10 minutes, 56.31 seconds, the second-fastest time in Oregon school history. The school record of 10:52.90 was set at last years NCAA meet when Hasay ran the anchor leg on that team that finished second.
Oregon easily won Fridays race, surpassing the NCAA automatic qualifying standard (11:03.50) and the meet record of 10:59.64, set by Oregon two years ago when Hasay ran the leadoff leg.
Hasay, who is making her season debut at the meet, is scheduled to run the mile and 3,000 today, two events she won at last years NCAA Indoor Championships.
