Prep Roundup: Morro Bay takes over first in the LPL boys basketball race

The Morro Bay High boys basketball team defeated Cabrillo 60-49 on Friday night in a battle for first place in the Los Padres League. Edward Griley led the Pirates (14-8, 6-1 LPL) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Bryce Owens added 14 points and Scott Mulligan contributed 13 points and seven rebounds for Morro Bay.

The Pirates outscored the Conquistadors (8-9 5-2 LPL) 25-12 in the first quarter and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. “It was a good battle for first in league and a great team effort,” Morro Bay coach Dave Yamate said.

Arroyo Grande 73, Pioneer Valley 27

Gunnar Gomez had 18 points, and Brent VanderVeen had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles (14-8, 7-1 PAC 7) to the blowout win over the Panthers (6-15, 0-7 PAC 7).

Arroyo Grande tallied 27 assists on 29 field goals.

Atascadero 50, Paso Robles 48

Robbie Berwick led the Greyhounds (14-7, 5-3 PAC 7) with 21 points, and Joe Johnson contributed 11 points for Atascadero.

Jaylon Davis scored 12 points, and Josh Wilson-Murry had 11 points for Paso Robles (5-14, 1-6).

Templeton 31, Santa Maria 29

The Eagles (9-13, 6-3 LPL) overcame a seven-point second-half deficit to defeat the Saints.

Despite leaving in the first quarter with an injury, Templeton’s Andy Garretson finished tied for a game-high nine points with teammate Alex Kotheimer.

Santa Maria (4-16, 1-6) scored only nine points in the second half.

Nipomo 47, Santa Ynez 38

The Titans (7-14, 4-3 LPL) overcame a 12-point first-quarter deficit to defeat the Pirates.

Scott Nichols and Ryan McNeil each had a team-high 14 points for Nipomo.

Santa Ynez (1-14, 0-7) was held to four points in the fourth quarter.

North County Christian 66, Shandon 24

Jon Katches and Daniel Katches combined for 40 points in the Crusaders’ (8-10, 6-3 CVL) victory over the Outlaws (1-10, 1-8).

Coast Union 61, Maricopa 36

Quinten Raethke and Miles Trevelyan both recorded double-doubles to lead the Broncos (11-5, 7-1 CVL) over the Indians (2-11, 2-6 CVL).

Raethke tied a game high with 19 points to go with 10 rebounds, and Trevelyan had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Coast Union. Logan Brandt also had 10 points for the Broncos.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mission Prep 49, San Luis Obispo 24

Bri Harvey scored 18 points, went 6 of 8 from the free-throw line and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Royals (20-1) to their 17th straight win. Teammates Jenna Dunbar added 14 points and eight assists, and Kaylee Williams had nine points.

San Luis Obispo (9-11) was outscored 25-9 in the second half after trailing 22-15 at halftime.

Atascadero 42, Paso Robles 30

Mary Kate Evans scored 24 points to lead the Greyhounds (14-6, 7-1 PAC 7) over the Bearcats.

Atascadero expanded on its four-point lead at the start of the second half with a 16-7 run, and Paso Robles (8-12, 1-6) could not close the gap.

Molly Donovan led Paso Robles with 10 points.

Arroyo Grande 56, Pioneer Valley 48

The Eagles (16-5, 8-0 PAC7) defeated the Panthers behind a trio of double-figure scorers.

Emma Weinreich led with 18 points, Heather Madrigal scored 13 and Lindsey Wolf added 10.

Arroyo Grande expanded a two-point lead to eight in the fourth quarter to pull away from Pioneer Valley.

Morro Bay 59, Cabrillo 11

The Pirates (15-3, 8-0 LPL) held the Conquistadores to four first-half points to jump to an early 30-point lead.

Morro Bay’s Nicki Bloom had a game-high 16 points, while Sierra Schwellenbach added 13 points and a game-high six assists.

Templeton 69, Santa Maria 30

Three Eagles (17-6, 8-1 LPL) scored in double figures in a rout of the Saints.

Mari Stewart scored a game-high 18 points, while Lauren Stuedemann and Briana Belmonte added 15 and 11 points, respectively, for Templeton. Stewart also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, and Stuedemann tallied seven assists.

Nipomo 47, Santa Ynez 46 OT

Jessica Miller scored 11 points, Taylor Nevitt had nine points and 15 rebounds and the Titans (3-17, 3-6 LPL) held on for the narrow victory at home.

Giana Abatti added six points, 11 rebounds and eight steals for Nipomo.

Orcutt Academy 41, Coastal Christian 26

Roni Garrison had 11 points for the Conquerors (5-6, 5-3 CVL).

North County Christian 59, Shandon 26

The Crusaders (10-1, 8-1 CVL) surrendered just eight first-half points and pushed their lead to as many as 21 in their victory over the Outlaws.

Mandy Legault scored 17 points for North County Christian, while Brianna Feld scored 16 points. Aliyah Morrison grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and added eight points.

Lety Muniz led Shandon (1-11, 1-8) with 15 points.

Pioneer Valley 2, Arroyo Grande 1

Brian Wright scored the lone Eagles goal as Arroyo Grande (9-10-3, 3-4-1 PAC 7) lost at home to the Panthers.

Alex Montero had five saves in goal for the Eagles.

Paso Robles 2, Atascadero 0

Daniel Jaimes scored the first goal for the Bearcats (11-2-7, 5-1-2 PAC 7) on an assist by Angel Garcia.

In the second half, Felipe Aguilar scored on Garcia’s second assist of the game.

Jesus Gill had four saves in goal for Paso Robles.

GIRLS SOCCER

Arroyo Grande 1, Pioneer Valley 0

Clair Summers scored on a Dana Simon assist just before halftime, and the Eagles (14-7, 6-2 PAC 7) won on the road.

Mikayla Allan had one save, and Paige Johnson had five in the combined shutout for Arroyo Grande.

Mission Prep 4, Cabrillo 1

Victoria Gill scored two goals, Rose Kelly and Sophie Smidth added a goal apiece and the Royals (10-7-1) won at home.

Grace Oeser had six saves in goal for Mission Prep.

Paso Robles 4, Atascadero 3, OT

Karoline Rendon led the Bearcats (3-4-1 PAC 7) with two goals, and Alyssa Harris netted the winning goal in overtime to give Paso Robles the victory over the Greyhounds.
