Local man accused of 16 counts of sexually abusing a minor

A local man who was in jail on suspicion of burglary is now also suspected of sexually abusing a minor, according to Morro Bay police.

Adam Joseph Bearden, 28, is being held in San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

Officers arrested Bearden on Jan. 16 on suspicion of stealing more than $3,000 from a residential safe in Morro Bay. Police say they do not have information linking Bearden to other burglaries.

While Bearden was in jail, police investigated a separate report alleging that he committed ongoing sexual crimes against a female younger than 14. They booked him on 16 felony counts of alleged sexual abuse of a minor under 14 years of age.

Morro Bay detectives say they are “working closely” with the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office and Child Welfare Services on filing additional charges.

Further information, including Bearden’s home address, is being withheld out of respect for the victim’s family.
