Construction continues on a project to widen the Santa Maria River bridge along Highway 101 near the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara county line.
The project will widen the bridge to six lanes from four with shoulders and includes a bike lane, which will be constructed near the southbound lanes behind a concrete barrier. It is expected to be complete in spring 2014.
Work is now progressing to install supports for the new traffic lanes and make alterations to the existing bridge supports, according to a news release from Caltrans. No lane closures are anticipated.
The $31 million project is intended to improve traffic flow on this section of Highway 101, minimize collisions and provide additional shoulders. The contractor is Flatiron West Inc. of Benicia.
Funding comes mainly from the Proposition 1B state bond with additional money from the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments, Caltrans spokesman Jim Shivers said.
