The Morro Bay High football team didnt have to search very far for a new head coach.
The Pirates found that person in Jack Greer, the longtime defensive coordinator who will take over a program that went 1-9 last season under John Andree, who resigned earlier this month to spend more time with his family after a 15-year career that included two league titles and a 92-78 overall record.
Andree continues to be the schools athletic director, a position hes held for the past five years, so he is familiar with Greers abilities as a coach.
He was the logical choice, he said of Greer. Hes been with the program. Hes been through the successes. Hes been with the kids. Itll be a seamless transition.
After starting his coaching career at Mission Prep in the 1980s, Greer was hired by Morro Bay to become a teacher, which led to roles within the Pirates football coaching staff. He was the schools junior varsity coach in 1998 before he became the varsity defensive coordinator the following year and holding that position until this season.
Im excited first and foremost, said Greer, who accepted the promotion last Friday. Its something that has always been in the back of my mind. However, I worked with John for 15 years and hes done a fantastic job of elevating the program. I feel like Im ready and excited to go.
He said he plans to instill the concepts of teamwork and accountability in the fall, adding that, The accountability is not for only the players themselves but also the coaching staff and the school administrators.
He wants everyone involved.
And thats why Greer was a logical choice, Andree said.
Hes a players coach, high energy and knowledgeable and hell put in a lot of time, Andree said. My expectation for Jack is to be Jack. If he continues to be himself, hell be successful.
Though they made the playoffs in 2010 with a .500 record, the Pirates last winning season was in 2008, when they finished 8-5. Morro Bay previously won the league title in 2007 with a 7-0 undefeated mark, a run that didnt end until the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division playoffs.
Since that year, the Pirates have compiled a 20-25 overall record.
With his new role, Greer is searching for assistant coaches to join his staff. Interested candidates should contact the school at 771-1845.
