Sgt. Joe Allen with the Atascadero Police Department was honored at Tuesday's Atascadero City Council meeting for helping save a man who went into cardiac arrest at the San Luis Obispo County Courthouse last month.
On Dec. 7, Allen was attending court when he heard someone shout, Call 911! from the lobby, Sgt. Gregg Meyer said in a news release.
Allen saw a man, whose name was not disclosed, unresponsive on the floor beneath the metal detector. He immediately stepped into a leadership role, summoning an automated external defibrillator and medical personnel, Meyer said.
Sheriffs deputies helped as Allen began CPR until the defibrillator equipment arrived. The defibrillator was then used three times until the man had a pulse and started breathing again, Meyer said.
The man was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo where his condition stabilized.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriffs Office also recognized Allen at the meeting.
