San Luis Obispo High girls basketball team gets 1st PAC 7 win in 2 years

Olivia Kilgore scored a team-high 18 points, Erica Chandler contributed 14, Jessica Judge finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, and the San Luis Obispo High girls basketball team prevented a late rally to achieve a rare milestone on Monday night by outlasting visiting Paso Robles 48-38 for its first PAC 7 victory in two years.

Ironically, San Luis Obispo’s previous league win was against Paso Robles, 48-37 on Feb. 8, 2010.

The Tigers (8-6, 1-1 PAC 7) have already exceeded expectations under first-year coach Dan Monroe, who took over a program that finished 1-24 last season. And the Tigers believe they still have more to prove.

“I think the first thing I tried to do when I took over the program was try to instill a level of confidence that we’d be competitive every time we step on the floor,” Monroe said. “I feel like if we bring good intensity every night for 32 minutes, we have a chance to compete in the league.”

Against Paso Robles (8-8, 1-2 PAC 7), the Tigers owned a 40-29 lead after three quarters before the Bearcats cut the deficit to 46-36 midway through the final period. San Luis Obispo was able to hold on despite going 7 for 20 at the foul line. “I was very proud of girls’ effort tonight,” Monroe said. “We played through a lot of adversity. I have to give Paso a lot of credit. They’re a scrappy bunch. They didn’t give us anything.”

Molly Donovan led Paso Robles with 20 points, and teammate Amani White added eight.

ARROYO GRANDE 46, ATASCADERO 37

Heather Madrigal finished 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Emma Weinreich added 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Arroyo Grande (11-5, 3-0 PAC 7), which held Atascadero (9-6, 2-1 PAC 7) to just 11 first-half points.

Casey Nero was Atascadero’s high scorer with 15 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL ARROYO GRANDE 60, ATASCADERO 57, OT

Brennan Rivera (17 points, 14 rebounds) ended regulation with a buzzer-beater on an offensive rebound, and Matt Willkomm (six points) and Gunnar Gomez (10 points, four assists) combined to go 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in overtime to give Arroyo Grande (9-8, 1-2 PAC 7) the win.

Brent VanderVeen finished with 21 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks, as the Eagles went 15 for 18 on foul shots.

For Atascadero (12-5, 2-1 PAC 7), Robert Berwick had a game-best 22 points on six 3-pointers, and Joseph Johnson and Hayden Mislavsky contributed 12 and 10, respectively.

SAN LUIS OBISPO 63, PASO ROBLES 56

Thanks to a 25-15 fourth quarter and 18-point performances from Scott Inman and Matt Moore, San Luis Obispo (8-6, 1-1 PAC 7) was able to come away with its first league win.

Chandler Torres knocked in two 3-pointers to finish with nine points.

Josh Wilson-Murry carried Paso Robles (6-10, 1-2 PAC 7) with a game-best 25 points, thanks to six 3-pointers.

GIRLS SOCCER SAN LUIS OBISPO 4, PASO ROBLES 3

Sydney Knauer and Kiley Norkus each knocked in two goals to lift the Tigers to an overall record of 11-3-2 and 2-0-0 in the PAC 7. Zoe Thompson, Eva Widstrand and Kristin Smith each added an assist, and goalkeeper Lauren Harper finished with four saves.

San Luis Obispo overcame an early 2-0 by scoring before halftime and adding more in the second half.

Paso Robles (11-5-3, 2-1-0 PAC 7) got goals from Alyssas Harris, Emilee Brown and Danica Boggs, with assists from Hannah Paul and Michalann Mott. Goalkeeper Kelsey Baughnn finished with seven saves.

ARROYO GRANDE 5, ATASCADERO 4, OT

Arroyo Grande forward Lupita Leon took advantage of a defensive miscue to score the winning goal seven minutes into overtime.

An Atascadero defender tried to kick the ball out of play near the goal, but Leon stole the ball and scored.

Mallory Flatebo finished with three goals for the Eagles (11-5-0, 3-0 PAC 7), and Roxy Harmon added a goal. Carly Chandless finished with two assists, and Claire Summer and Nadine Reed each assisted on a goal. Goalkeeper Mikayla Allan collected five saves.

Olivia Dobbs, Miai Mumford, Christine Curtis and Hannah McMillan each scored for Atascadero, with assists from Savannah McCarthy, Curtis and McMillan.

BOYS SOCCER SAN LUIS OBISPO 2, PASO ROBLES 1

Paul Sullivan scored twice in the first half to lead the Tigers past the Bearcats in Paso Robles.

Sullivan’s first goal came just two minutes into the game and was assisted by Matthew Connely. Lukas Holocher assisted the second goal for San Luis Obispo (9-1-2, 2-0-0 PAC 7).

The Bearcats (8-2-5, 2-1-0) got a goal from Angel Guevara on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.

ARROYO GRANDE 6, ATASCADERO 1

The Eagles raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead in a big win at home over the Greyhounds.

Brian Wright had two goals and an assists for Arroyo Grande (8-7-2, 2-1-0PAC 7). Josh Wilkins and Angel Rodriguez each added a goal and an assist, and Miguel Fregoso and Oscar Munoz each scored a goal.

Isaias Magandall had the only goal on a second-half penalty kick for Atascadero (2-9-2, 0-3-0).
