Atascadero's boys basketball team opens with big PAC 7 victory

The Atascadero High boys basketball team defeated San Luis Obispo 62-42 in the PAC 7 opener for both teams Wednesday.

Robert Berwick put up a team-high 18 points, while Joe Johnson and Connor Kim added 17 and 14, respectively, for the Greyhounds (10-4).

“It was a good win for us,” Atascadero coach Jerry Tamalier said. “San Luis Obispo had a great preseason and we’ve been playing very well. They were a good shooting team and we did a good job defensively and had a lot of players contributing to the win tonight.”

Atascadero took a 10-point advantage in the first quarter and stretched the lead to as many as 20 in the second half.

Matt Moore led San Luis Obispo (7-6) with 19 points.

“We just had a very poor shooting night, nothing seemed to fall,” San Luis Obispo coach Jim Thompson said. “They kept coming at us and we couldn’t answer.”

Paso Robles 65, Pioneer Valley 36

The Bearcats (6-8, 1-0 PAC 7) defeated the Panthers behind an explosive fourth quarter, outscoring Pioneer Valley 26-8.

Matt Van Dyk led Paso Robles with 22 points, while Josh Wilson-Murry had 11, and both Rudy Binkele and Ben Oliver added 10.

Morro Bay 63, Cabrillo 52

Edward Griley and Bryce Owens combined for 38 points in the Pirates’ (9-7, 2-0 Los Padres League) victory over the Conquistadores.

Morro Bay pulled away in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Griley finished with a game-high 20 points, and Owens added 18.

Templeton 55, Santa Maria 30

Andy Garrettson led the Eagles (5-11, 2-1 LPL) with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Eric Fragione added 14 points for Templeton, and Casey Dakin had 10 rebounds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Arroyo Grande 59, Righetti 45

Behind Lindsey Wolf’s team-high 18 points, the Eagles (9-5) defeated the Warriors in the PAC 7 opener for both teams.

Arroyo Grande’s Heather Madrigal had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Brianna Flood added 12 points.

Paso Robles 48, Pioneer Valley 46

Three Bearcats posted double figures as Paso Robles won its PAC 7 opener.

Mollie Donovan led Paso Robles (8-6) with 16 points, Amani White scored 12 and Katie Knupper scored 11.

Atascadero 67, San Luis Obispo 31

The Greyhounds (8-5, 1-0 PAC 7) defeated the Tigers behind Mary Kate Evans, who had 26 points.

Emily Boego and Zayra Solorzano added 11 points apiece for Atascadero.

“They are a young team and they have improved a lot,” Atascadero coach Jim Stecher said. “We caught them off guard, but they have come a long way and are doing a great job.”

Santa Ynez 67, Nipomo 60

Tess Latimer’s team-high 15 points couldn’t stop the Titans from dropping a league matchup to Santa Ynez.

Peyton Maas scored 13 points and had six rebounds for Nipomo (1-15, 1-2 LPL), while Gianna Abatti scored 12 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.

Templeton 73, Santa Maria 30

Mari Stewart scored a team-high 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Eagles past the Saints.

Lauren Stuedemann also scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Templeton (12-4, 3-0 LPL). Marissa Torres scored 17.

Morro Bay 49, Cabrillo 7

Sierra Schwellenbach scored 13 points as the Pirates (9-3, 2-0 LPL) defeated the Conquistadores (1-9, 0-3 LPL).

Hannah Gilbert added nine points and 10 rebounds.

BOYS SOCCER

Paso Robles 4, Pioneer Valley 1

The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead, but the Bearcats (7-1-5) scored four straight en route to a victory in their PAC 7 opener After trailing most of the first half, Paso Robles’ Matt Mihelic tied the score three minutes before halftime with an assist from Angel Guevara.

In the 42nd minute, the Bearcats took a 2-1 lead with a goal from Angel Garcia off an assist by Felipe Aguilar.

Daniel Viramontes and Seferino Gutierrez padded Paso Robles’ lead with a goal apiece.

Goalie Junior Rodriguez finished with three saves.

San Luis Obispo 6, Atascadero 0

Five different scorers led the Tigers (8-1-2) to a victory over the Greyhounds in their league opener.

San Luis Obispo’s Paul Sullivan scored a game-high two goals, while Scott Allis, Matt Connely, Travis Caldwell and Miko Thule each added one.

Lukas Holocher had two assists, and goalie Baldric Bermudez had one save in the shutout.

Arroyo Grande 3, Righetti 1

The Eagles (7-6-2, 1-0 PAC 7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute and never relinquished the lead.

Angel Rodriguez scored the Eagles’ first two goals, both assisted by Josh Wilkins. Mario Herrera scored Arroyo Grande’s last goal.

Eagles goalie Alex Montero had five saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Paso Robles 5, Pioneer Valley 0

Emiliee Brown scored three goals, and the Bearcats shut out Panthers.

Emily Vallejos and Michalan Mott both had a goal for Paso Robles (10-3-2, 1-0-0 PAC 7).

Kelsey Vaughn had five saves.

San Luis Obispo 3, Atascadero 2

The Tigers nearly let a 2-0 halftime lead slip but held on for the victory.

Kiley Norkus, Bridget Devaney and Kristine Smith all scored for the Tigers (10-3-2, 1-0-0 PAC 7) Lauren Harper had five saves in goal for San Luis Obispo.

Arroyo Grande 1, Righetti 0

Mallory Flatebo scored a goal in the 73rd minute to push the Eagles past the Warriors.

Paige Johnson assisted the score.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 15, San Luis Obispo 2

Alexis Elias led the Eagles (10-1, 4-0 PAC 7) with four goals in the win over the Tigers. Hannah Cope added three goals for Arroyo Grande, and goalie Kylie Anderson had five saves.

For San Luis Obispo (6-5, 2-1 PAC 7), Kacie Gin and Elizabeth Waddell had a goal apiece.
