Cuesta College's Malte Kramer scored a team-high 31 points, with seven 3-pointers, and the Cuesta mens basketball team defeated rival Ventura 84-79 in their Western State Conference opener Wednesday on the road.
Calen Coleman, who was just named the Cougars Male Athlete of the Month, scored 16 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots from the floor, and had 13 rebounds. He came into Wednesdays matchup averaging 16.6 points per game, with 6.3 rebounds per game and 1.6 assists per game.
Nick Sauer added 11 points for Cuesta (13-6, 1-0 WSC), which shot both 44 percent from the floor and from behind the 3-point arc.
WOMENS BASKETBALL
Ventura 73, Cuesta 34
Reigning female Cuesta Athlete of the Month Kati Sheldon was one of three scorers to post a team-high eight points, but the Cougars fell to Ventura in their WSC opener.
Sheldon came into Wednesdays game averaging 11.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. She had six rebounds and two steals against Ventura.
Katie Rodriguez and Alyssa Palma also scored eight points for Cuesta (8-8, 0-1 WSC).
Cuesta shot 12 percent from the floor in the first half, compared to Venturas 44 percent.
