  Ella Thorp Ellis recently visited her “old stomping grounds” in Oceano and Halcyon, giving a presentation in Arroyo Grande to discuss her recent book, “Dune Child.”

  Ella, who is 83 years old and lives in Santa Cruz, spent five years as a child living in Moy Mell (Gaelic for “land of honey”), a colony of artists, writers, photographers and philosophers nestled in the Oceano Dunes during the Great Depression. She vividly describes several characters who lived there, including her father, Dunham Thorp, and mother, Marion Thorp.

  Ella had polio at age 4 in Los Angeles. Her father was convinced by Hugo Seelig, a poet and Dunite, that she could be cured by Oceano doctor Rudy Gerber. Dunham (Ella calls her parents and other adults by their first names), a press agent for Joan Crawford, and Marion, a poet and violinist, saw it as a way to live off the land and write.

  David Angello, a lifelong Oceano resident, businessman and former member of the Oceano Community Services District board, died early Saturday.

  Angello, 58, died of complications from heart surgery, Tom Geaslen, general manager of the services district, said Monday. “He was totally involved in the community,” said Oceano resident Barbara Mann, who served three terms on the district board with Angello.

  A third-generation resident of San Luis Obispo County, Angello graduated from Arroyo Grande High School, where he met his wife of 39 years, Lori, who now serves on the Oceano district board. They have an ATV rental business, and David Angello was a licensed building contractor.

  UPDATE 3:40 p.m. Monday: The Arroyo Grande woman killed in a two-car crash Friday night has been identified as Anna Katherine Beckner, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

  Original story: An Arroyo Grande woman was killed in a two-car crash late Friday along Highway 166 about 50 miles east of Nipomo near the Santa Barbara County town of New Cuyama, according to the California Highway Patrol.

  The 40-year-old woman — whose name was not disclosed pending notification of her family — died of blunt force trauma, according to a Saturday press release from the CHP’s Santa Maria barracks.

  Ella Thorp Ellis, who as a child during the Great Depression lived with the Dunites along San Luis Obispo County’s southern coast, will talk about her new book, “Dune Child,” at the Tuesday meeting of the South County Historical Society.

  The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at the International Order of Oddfellows Hall, 128 Bridge St. in Arroyo Grande.

  “I’ve lived a lucky life,” Ellis said.

  Christopher Meadows, a Sheriff's Office search-and-rescue team member who died in an all-terrain vehicle incident at the Oceano Dunes nearly three years ago while responding to a call, could be in line to have a stretch of either Highway 101 or Highway 1 named after him.

  The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider sending a letter to Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian, R-San Luis Obispo, formally asking him to introduce legislation that would lead to a stretch of Highway 101 between Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo or a stretch of Highway 1 being named after Meadows.

  Meadows, 24, was responding to a report of a person having a broken leg at the Oceano Dunes when his ATV rolled over on him. The accident occurred May 24, 2009.
