Amaurys Fermin matched a career-high with 17 points to lead the Cal Poly men’s basketball team to a 67-61 win over Hope International at Mott Gym on Thursday.

David Hansen notched his second straight double-double for the Mustangs (9-4) with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Drake U’u added 10 points and four steals in Cal Poly’s final game before opening up Big West Conference play.

The Mustangs scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed. The Royals did close the gap to one point twice in the second half, but the Cal Poly defense held.

At Allan Hancock Tournament

Calen Coleman scored 11 points and Plamen Hristov and Nick Sauer added nine each as Cuesta edged Bakersfield 48-47 in the semifinals.

With 3 minutes left, Coleman went on a personal 7-0 run, connecting on two lay-ups and one 3-pointer to give Cuesta the lead. Coleman would miss the front end of three one and ones as Bakersfield clawed back, but the Cougars would hold as the final shot rimmed out.

Hristov and Malte Kramer led Cuesta with six rebounds each.

Neither team shot very well, with Bakersfield connecting on 21-50 field goals and Cuesta hitting 20-48. Both teams combined to go 3-10 at the free throw line.

Cuesta will take the court again today in the tournament final at 5 p.m.

Wrestling

Ryan Smith is the lone Cal Poly wrestler left at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championship after two days of competition. Smith, wrestling at 197 pounds, won three of four matches Thursday to advance to the wrestleback quarterfinals. Smith then defeated Marty Smith (Illinois) 10-3 and Trent Fiegel (Luther) 8-1.

Smith will face No. 6 seeded Danny Mitchell (American) this afternoon.

Atticus Disney (285) was seeded No. 8 and defeated Dan Hopkins (Rutgers) 4-1 before he was sent into the wrestlebacks with a 7-5 loss to Conner Medbery (Wisconsin). Disney beat Cole Tobin (Wisconsin) 8-1 before he was ousted by Matt Gibson (Iowa State) 6-2.

Jake Tanenbaum (133) and Dominic Kastl (174) were eliminated earlier in the day.

Cal Poly is currently sitting in 30th place with 8.5 points. Iowa (79.5 points) is the leader through two days, followed by Northwestern (71) and Oklahoma (69).
