Tyler Dawson, 19, of Arroyo Grande has received a principal nomination for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., from Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield.
Dawson attends Northwestern Preparatory School in Lake Arrowhead, which was created to train students to gain entrance into one of the service academies. While in high school, he played football and baseball, serving as captain on both teams.
McCarthy, whose congressional district sprawls from Ridgecrest in the High Desert to Arroyo Grande and other parts of San Luis Obispo County, on Monday announced his nominations to the United States Service Academies. He chose one principal nominee to each academy as well as alternates.
The national academies are the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; the Military Academy at West Point in New York; the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.; and the Merchant Marine Academy, also in New York.
Dawson was the only principal nominee to any academy from San Luis Obispo County. The others McCarthy chose are from Bakersfield.
McCarthy nominated some SLO County students to all four academies as competing alternates.
They will be ranked according to their competitiveness by the Academy Admission Board and selected for admission at the academies’ discretion.
They are Avery Grossman, Templeton High School, Air Force Academy; Dustin Weir, San Luis Obispo High School, West Point; Edward Muncy, Templeton High School, Annapolis; and David Paine, Arroyo Grande High School, Merchant Marine Academy.
Nominees were selected in a competitive process in which a number of highly qualified 22nd Congressional District high school and college students applied for consideration, McCarthy wrote in a news release.
In his news release, Mc-Carthy noted that Austin Daniel Wiemann, 17, of North County Christian School in Atascadero, received a presidential nomination to both the United States Naval Academy and the United States Air Force Academy, and has accepted the offer of appointment to the Naval Academy.
Wiemann follows his brother, John Paul, who received a presidential appointment last year to the United States Naval Academy.
