Paso Robles High wrestling leads Nevada tournament

With two grapplers alive for a championship and six more angling for a top-10 finish, the Paso Robles High wrestling team leads all 97 teams after the first day of competition Wednesday at the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno, Bearcats assistant coach Matt Monteiro said.

“We’ve never been in a tournament of this size leading the tournament after the first day,” Monteiro said. Robby Standley, at 113 pounds, and Kevan Garcia (145) each went 3-0 and have clinched finishes within the top 12 going into today’s quarterfinal round.

Trevor Torres (106), Colton Madrigal (170), Jimmy Pacheco (195) and Deonte Willis (220) all went 4-1. Chase Phillips (138) and Brady Zubia (152) were 3-1 and joined the others in the wrestlebacks to clinch spots in the top 16.

Paso Robles leads the team score by one point but heads into today’s final rounds as the favorite.

“We have the potential to score 290 points, and that’s 49 ½ more than anyone else,” said Monteiro, in his fourth season as an assistant under his father Chris. “We’re projected to win this thing.

“We came here expecting to place in top 10, and that was kind of a good hope. To be leading has been a great thing to see come together.

“If these guys wrestle to their potential, I think this is the best team Paso’s ever had.

BOYS BASKETBALL At Atascadero Tournament

Atascadero will play in the championship game of its own tournament for the second consecutive year after edging Corona del Mar 59-53, with 19 points from Connor Kim and 13 points and 10 rebounds from Robert Berwick.

The Greyhounds will get a rematch with Montclair today at 2:30 p.m.

Montclair, which beat Atascadero in last season’s tournament title game, advanced after handing Templeton a 68-40 loss with a 36-20 second half.

Andy Garretson led Templeton with 17 points.

At Estancia Coast Classic Tournament in Costa Mesa

Scott Inman was the lone San Luis Obispo player to score in double figures, as he recorded 12 points in a 70-54 loss to JSerra.

The loss dropped San Luis Obispo to 5-5 after opening the season with five straight wins.

At Merv Lopes Classic in Honolulu

Mission Prep opened the tournament with a close 49-48 loss to Kamehameha Hawai’i, despite getting 19 points from Connor Woolpert and 10 points and 12 rebounds from Zach Allmon.

The Royals fell to 9-3 overall and will play Brentwood of British Columbia today in the next round.

“It was disappointing loss,” Mission Prep coach Terrance Harris said. “It was a game that we let get away from us in the second half, but with all of our games, we hope to learn from our mistakes and bounce back.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL Paso Robles 44, Lompoc 30

Katie Knupper had 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead three Bearcats players in double figures as Paso Robles (7-5) advanced to the third-place game of the tournament at Righetti.

Molly Donovan scored 14 and Amani White pitched in 12 as the Bearcats erased a one-point deficit after the first quarter with a 12-2 run in the second.

Paso Robles will play Atascadero at noon today.

Atascadero fell 59-57 to Santa Barbara despite Mary Kate Evans’ 21 points Casey Nero’s 16.

Arroyo Grande 49, Monterey 12

The Eagles overwhelmed Monterey with a well-rounded performance, as 10 players scored in the nonconference game. Emma Weinreich led with 10 points, as the Arroyo Grande defense held Monterey scoreless in the second and third quarters.

At Stockdale Tournament in Bakersfield

Templeton went 1-1 in Wednesday’s round of games, beating Burroughs 55-36 before losing to host Stockdale 72-45.

In the first game against Burroughs, the Eagles (10-3) were led by Lauren Stuedemann (18 points, five steals), Mari Stewart (14 points, 17 rebounds), Autumn Russell (13 points, 10 rebounds).

In the second game against Stockdale, the Eagles couldn’t stop the Stockdale duo of Nakia Page (27 points) and Alyssa Shannon (20) and were outscored 37-22 in the second half. Templeton’s Stewart and Torres finished with 16 points apiece.

The Eagles also committed 23 turnovers against Stockdale.

GIRLS SOCCER At Santa Maria Tournament

Atascadero captured the Silver Division after beating Independence-Bakersfield 2-1, thanks to a pair of scores from Rhiannon Dudley.

In the second half, Racheal Andrade was fouled in the box, setting up a successful penalty kick for Dudley to give the Greyhounds the winning score.

Earlier in the day, Atascadero (9-2-1) settled for a 1-1 tie with Pioneer Valley.

Also at the Santa Maria Tournament, Paso Robles finished second in the Gold Division after beating Centennial of Bakersfield 1-0, thanks to a goal by Carly McCall, and losing to Tulare West 1-0.

The Bearcats went 3-1 in the tournament.
