Lighting up the Christmas tree has been a tradition for more than 100 years, but it was not until the 1950s that Americans began putting brightly colored lights on the outsides of their homes for decoration.
At a home on Pereira Drive near Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo, it seems hardly an inch of tree, fence or roof is without a strand of brilliant lights.
