Noting it was the longest night of the year Wednesday, advocates for the homeless marked National Homeless Persons Memorial Day with a ceremony in Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo.
In its resolution recognizing the local observance, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors noted that an estimated 3,800 men, women and children in the county are “unsheltered and inadequately housed.”

Winter weather, the resolution adds, exacerbates physical and mental illnesses as well as malnutrition, and can lead to death.
“In remembering those who have died on the streets,” the resolution states, the cause of ending homelessness is urgent, as is the county’s collective commitment to preventing such deaths.
Advocates for the homeless have opened two “warming shelters” in the past week, as overnight temperatures dropped to the 30s and, in some locations in San Luis Obispo County, into the 20s.
