Forward David Hanson and guard Amaurys Fermin scored 12 points apiece to lead Cal Poly to a 65-46 victory over Fresno State on Saturday night, marking the first win for the Mustangs over the Bulldogs in 41 years.
Drake U'u added 11 points for the Mustangs (8-3), who held Fresno State to 35 percent shooting. Cal Poly also made 9 of 21 3-point attempts, including 3 of 4 by Fermin.

Jonathan Wills had 14 points, and Jerry Brown had 10 for the Bulldogs (4-7).
Cal Poly led 30-21 at halftime after Fermin hit a long 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer, then held Fresno State to just six points in the first 9:32 of the second half to increase that lead to 20.
The Bulldogs used a full-court press to cut the deficit to 48-40 but couldn’t get any closer. Dylan Royer’s 3-pointer, and a layup by U’u, put the Mustangs back in front 58-40 with 3:06 remaining.
Off to their best start since the 2001-2002 campaign, Cal Poly has won six of their past seven games, and looks to continue that when they head to Chicago to face DePaul on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
Cuesta’s Calen Coleman and Plamen Hristov combined to go 5 for 5 from 3-point range in the final five minutes to put the semifinal game out of reach in the San Joaquin Delta Tournament in Stockton.
Cuesta will play San Francisco City College in today’s championship game.
Coleman had a team-high 27 points, going 6 for 9 from 3-point land. Hristov scored 19 points, and Malte Kramer scored 14.
The Cougars (10-4) shot 53 percent from the field.
Forward Kristina Santiago scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds but couldn’t keep the Mustangs from dropping their fifth straight game. Christine Martin had eight points for Cal Poly (3-7), which shot 17.1 percent from the field in the first half. The Mustangs shot 26.2 in the game.
The Mustangs trailed 45-19 at halftime.
Katie Rodriguez scored 21 points as the Cougars (8-5) held on for the victory in the consolation semifinals of the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic at Orange Coast College.
Rodriguez had 17 in the first half, putting Cuesta up 37-21 at the break. Southwestern then came out firing, erasing the Cougars’ lead and taking a 59-57 lead with under a minute remaining.
Emily McCullah, who finished with 11 points for Cuesta, answered with a 3-point play give the Cougars the lead. After a Southwestern basket, Rachael Warner converted a steal with a layup, and Kati Sheldon added another basket to seal the win shortly thereafter.
Alyssa Palma, who left the game with an elbow injury, finished with seven points and seven rebounds for the Cougars, who face Chaffey in the consolation finals today.
Junior Angie Haven won two events for Cal Poly.
She won the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 17:09 seconds and then won the 200-meter breaststroke (2:41.64).
Gloria Benefield won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:23.62.
