Mission Prep boys basketball team grabs win over Miramonte

The Mission Prep boys basketball team defeated Miramonte 62-44 on Saturday in the opening round of the Elite Division at the Mission Prep Christmas Classic Tournament.

Andy Rowley had a team-high 18 points for the Royals (8-1) and made four 3-pointers.

“He was the spark we needed to get the offense going tonight,” Mission Prep coach Terrance Harris said. “We continue to have different guys stepping up.”

A key factor for Mission Prep has been the play of freshman guard Quinton Adlesh, who finished with 15 points.

“I was proud of the freshman for the minutes and the energy he brought to the team tonight,” Harris said. “He has a tremendous ability to handle the tempo of the game. His ability to find the open shot for others and knock down open looks with his quick release is amazing.” Cal Poly signee Zach Allmon posted 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Royals.

Mission Prep next plays Monday against the winner of the game between Campbell and Santa Clara.

In other Elite Division action, San Luis Obispo lost 54-36 to Cypress Bay of Weston, Fla.

Scott Inman had 10 points, and Chandler Torres and Matt Moore scored seven points each for the Tigers (5-1).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Morro Bay, Arroyo Grande at Carpinteria Tournament

Arroyo Grande’s Brent VanderVeen scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Eagles defeat Nordhoff 55-37.

Jackson Zimmerman scored 10 points for the Eagles, and Brennan Rivera scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.

For Morro Bay, Bryce Owens sank four 3-pointers, had a team-high 16 points and led the Pirates to a 59-57 win over Bishop Diego.

Edward Griley scored 15, and Marcus Zorovich had 11 with 12 rebounds and six assists. Luke Munds scored 10 points, and Scott Milligan had 10 rebounds for the Pirates (8-5).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mission Prep 55, Morro Bay 45

Jenna Dunbar scored 23 points, and hit five 3-pointers, to lead the Royals (8-1) to the comeback victory over the Pirates (5-2).

Down 27-15 at halftime, Mission Prep cut the lead to 40-34 at the end of three quarters. It was all Royals from there. Mission Prep outscored Morro Bay 21-5 in the final frame, securing the road victory.

Kaylee Williams had 13 points and five steals, and Bri Harvey added 12 points for the Royals.

Hannah Gilbert had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates.

San Luis Obispo at Farmersville Aztec Invitational

The Tigers defeated Woodlake 31-14 in the championship game of the Farmersville Aztec Invitational.

San Luis Obispo led 25-7 at the half and held Woodlake scoreless in the third quarter.

Erica Chandler led the Tigers (7-5) with 10 points.

In their first game of the day, the Tigers defeated host Farmersville 45-11.

Chandler had 12 points, Jessica Judge had six points and seven rebounds and Olivia Kilgore had six points and seven steals for San Luis Obispo.

San Luis Obispo, Coast Union at the Garces Tournament

The Tigers won two games Saturday and finished the tournament 3-0 and won the Premier A division.

In the division championship game, the Tigers (7-1-2) beat Bakersfield 3-2. Travis Caldwell opened the scoring, and Matthew Connely broke a 1-1 tie with a goal just before halftime. The goal was assisted by Paul Sullivan.

Sullivan assisted Jordan Knauer’s second-half goal to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Michael Lambert made five saves for San Luis Obispo.

In the morning game, the Tigers beat Wasco 3-1 on goals from David Canca (assisted by Connely), Knauer and Miko Thule.

Coast Union defeated Bakersfield North 2-1 in its first matchup. Jeu Arroyo and Luis DeAlba both scored. Juan Leonardo had six saves.

The Broncos then lost to Bakersfield South, 3-1. Victor Casas had the only goal for Coast Union (4-1-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Atascadero, Morro Bay at Garces Tournament

Atascadero (7-1) lost 2-0 to Liberty of Madera in the tournament semifinals.

In the game, the Greyhounds lost their starting senior goalie, Hannah Tovar, to a knee injury.

Starting in Tovar’s place in the third-place game was Candace Johnson, who was called up from the JV team for the tournament.

Johnson had seven saves in the game as Atascadero defeated Independence 4-2. Christine Curtis scored two goals, and Hannah McMillan and Nique Mack scored one each as the Greyhounds wrapped up the tournament in third place.

Morro Bay lost both of its matchups, falling to Yosemite 3-0 and Sutter 4-3. Tia Ramos scored all three goals for Morro Bay (0-9-1).

WRESTLING

Morro Bay at Zinkin Tournament

The Pirates had two wrestlers place at the Zinkin Tournament.

Dolin Mininni placed fourth at 145 pounds, and Kent Beecham placed seventh at 160 pounds.
