Atascadero has a new mayor through fall 2012
Bob Kelley takes over as San Luis Obispo County's last appointed mayor; in November city voters will elect the post
The council unanimously agreed to appoint Kelley as mayor and former mayor Tom O'Malley as its mayor pro tem.
The city rotates the two positions among its five City Council members for one-year terms.
The council took a short recess at its meeting to change their seats and name placards in the council chambers to reflect the leadership changes.
Atascadero is the only city of San Luis Obispo County's seven that does not have voters elect its mayor.
But in November 2010, Atascadero voters approved a measure allowing them to pick their mayor starting in the 2012 election.
Council member Roberta Fonzi previously expressed concern that whoever was appointed to serve as mayor in the term before the 2012 election would be given an edge from being an incumbent should that person run for the elected seat.
On Tuesday, Fonzi asked Kelley whether he plans to run in the 2012 election for mayor. He replied saying his has "no intentions to run."
In a short statement to the council, Kelley said he was honored to take the helm and looks forward to leading the council on projects such as the rehabilitation work on the historic City Administration Building, tackling the proposed Walmart and The Annex developments and planning the community's centennial in 2013.
Kelley joined the council in 2008 and has served as its Mayor Pro Tem and Vice Chairman of the city's Redevelopment Agency, according to the city.
He also served on the City’s Planning Commission from 2000 to 2006.
