San Luis Obispo County supervisors today are expected to approve a request to spend up to $7.6 million to hire an engineering firm to oversee the construction of the Los Osos sewer.
The countys Public Works Department has selected the Walnut Creek office of HDR Engineering for the job of construction management services of the $173 million project.
Although construction is not expected to begin until early summer, filling the contract is necessary because several preconstruction tasks must be completed, project manager John Waddell said in a staff report.
Chief among these is what engineers call a constructability review, which provides recommendations to increase efficiency, safety and public convenience, reduce construction costs and reduce risks of contractor conflicts as well as bid packaging.
The project is expected to go out to bid in March, and construction is expected to take three years to complete. HDR Engineering was one of six firms to bid for the construction management contract.
The massive infrastructure project calls for the construction and installation of a sewage collection and treatment system to serve the Los Osos and Baywood Park communities. The project is financed with loans from the state and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
