Parking kiosks could land at SLO airport

Travelers would no longer need to pay inside then return to their cars if supervisors approve plan today

A dozen self-service payment kiosks will dot the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport parking area starting in March should the county Board of Supervisors approve a proposal from the General Services Department.

The kiosks would allow drivers who use the lots to avoid going into the airport’s terminal building to pay for parking and then back to where their cars are, as many travelers currently must do.

Customers would be able to pay with cash, credit card, ATM card or payment coupon.

The kiosks would improve customer satisfaction and eventually increase revenue, according to a staff report to the board from Katie Perez, deputy director of the county’s General Services Department.

Digital Payment Technologies won a bid to install the kiosks. The cost would be $148,633.

Since the recession forced the Board of Supervisors to pare back on its once-ambitious plans for a new terminal and parking structures, the county has been making smaller, incremental improvements at the airport.

In November 2010, the board gave the go-ahead for lighting upgrades, directional signs and the kiosks. The first two improvements have already been made.

The kiosks are on the supervisors’ agenda for today. The meeting is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the County Government Center, 1055 Monterey St. in San Luis Obispo.
