A section of blacktop at the Boys & Girls Clubs of South San Luis Obispo County in Oceano was transformed in just six hours Saturday.

Volunteers built, made adjustments and officially dedicated a new playground that was designed based on drawings local children created in October.

The construction happened as part of a partnership between PG&E and KaBOOM!, a nationwide nonprofit organization founded in 1995 in Washington, D.C., with the goal of providing a place to play within walking distance of every child.

The playground is one of three that will be built in California over the course of three weeks.

PG&E provided most of the funding — about $219,000 of the $245,000 cost — to build three playgrounds with KaBOOM! and local community partners. The Boys & Girls Clubs of South San Luis Obispo County provided $8,500 toward the cost of the Oceano playground.

Those figures do not include in-kind donations the nonprofit group has received, such as wood, and the time from the volunteers to build the playgrounds, according to KaBOOM! spokesman Mike Vietti.
