The National Weather Service has issued a Marine Weather Statement warning of a threat of waterspouts Sunday night through Monday night near shore in the waters off of San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County.
Forecasters say that a frontal system building over the eastern Pacific Ocean Sunday is strengthening over offshore waters while approaching the coastal waters into the night.
The agency says the front is expected to move over the region Monday, and the water spouts threat is expected as thunderstorms develop along, and following, the front.
Forecasters say that mariners should prepare for locally gusty winds and lightning, as well as heavy seas and brief, but heavy, rain.
They warn that if a water spout is sighted, to head immediately at a 90-degree angle from the spout’s motion.
The weather statement covers the waters between Point Piedras Blancas north of Cambria to Point Arguello in northern Santa Barbara County, out to 60 nautical miles offshore.
It extends to the Santa Barbara Channel and the Channel Islands.
