Cal Poly guard Matt Titchenal scored a career-high 16 points, going a perfect 4 for 4 from 3-point range, and the Cal Poly basketball team defeated San Jose State 47-40 on the road Saturday.
This was a major coming out party for him, Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero said. From the offensive end he saved our bacon and it was good that he did it in front of family and friends.
Hes been our defensive stopper and controls the ball. In practice we have seen his continued development. Tonight he made some good, open rhythm shots.
Titchenal, who had never scored more than nine points in a game, was the only Cal Poly scorer in double figures. Will Taylor was the next closest with eight points, guard Drake Uu scored seven points and forward David Hanson had five.
The Mustangs shot 33 percent from the field and sank 7 of 24 shots from behind the 3-point arc.
Its the second win this season over the Spartans for the Mustangs, who have started the year 6-3 the best record among all Big West teams so far in nonconference play.
