Prep Roundup: Mission Prep girls win basketball tourney

The Mission Prep girls basketball team clinched the Perry Ford Holiday Tournament championship with a 46-41 win over Carson on Saturday.

Jenna Dunbar was named tournament MVP after her 17-point, four-assist performance in the game. Teammate Kaylee Williams, who had nine points Saturday, was named to the all-tournament team.

Connor Storlie had 12 points, and Morgan Liebscher had a team-high nine rebounds.

Arroyo Grande defeated Ridgeview 55-40, led by Heather Madrigal’s 15 points and 15 rebounds. Madrigal was named to the all-tournament team.

Lindsey Wolf and Brianna Flood scored 11, and Emma Weinreich scored nine for the Eagles.

Templeton defeated Frontier 62-32 as Marissa Torres scored 25 points, and Lauren Studemann scored 12. Mari Stewart had 19 rebounds, eight points and six assists.

Studemann had six assists and five steals.

San Luis Obispo defeated Nipomo 50-28, behind 15 points from Ericka Chandler and 13 from Christine Freberg.

The Tigers’ Jessica Judge also had 10 points for the Tigers, which outscored Nipomo 42-23 through three quarters.

Atascadero defeated Centennial 47-46. Christie Scarson hit a free throw in the last second of the game to win it for the Greyhounds. Mary-Kate Evans was top scorer for Atascadero with 25 points and also had 18 rebounds.

Morro Bay (3-1) lost its final game in the tournament to Pioneer Valley 42-40.

Hannah Gilbert 1ed the Pirates with 16 points, and Sierra Schwellenbach scored 15 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

San Luis Obispo (4-0) won the championship game against Exeter, 81-49. Chandler Torres led the Tigers with 16 points, and Carlson Schwoerer and Matt Delmartini each added 11 points.

Arroyo Grande Optimist Tournament

The Mission Prep Royals turned a 27-22 halftime deficit into nearly a 30-point win, defeating Bakersfield Christian 77-49 in their first game Saturday.

The Royals held Bakersfield Christian to two points in the third quarter, while scoring 13.

Zach Allmon scored 14 points, Connor Woolpert scored 12 and Patrick Laird and Quinton Adlesh both scored 10.

In their second game, the Royals didn’t lose steam. With 22 points from Woolpert, the Royals defeated Marina 72-54.

Allmon had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Andy Rowley had seven points with 12 assists.

For Atascadero, the tournament was a bit more dramatic. Against Thousand Oaks in their first game, the Greyhounds saw Thousand Oaks sink a desperation bank shot and a 3-pointer to tie it at 64 through the first overtime. Atascadero then went on to win 72-69 in the second overtime.

Robert Berwick led the Greyhounds with 34 points, Hayden Mislavsky had 14 and Joe Johnson had 13.

Atascadero (4-3) lost to Santa Barbara, 66-49, in its second game. Berwick, Connor Kim, and Will Mehring all scored 10 points.

Coast Union/Paso Robles Tournament

Morro Bay fell 67-50 in the championship game to Santa Fe Christian of San Diego.

Scott Milligan had 12 points, and Luke Munds had 11 for the Pirates (5-5).

To get to the final, the Pirates had four players in double figures in their first matchup, defeating Taft 54-39.

Luke Munds led Morro Bay with 18 points, both Edward Griley and Marcus Zorovich scored 13, and Scott Milligan scored 12. Templeton split its matchups in the tournament. The Eagles fell 47-38 to Paso Robles, and then defeated Lompoc 46-35.

Against the Bearcats, Andy Garrettson scored 10 points, while Paso Robles’ Josh Wilson Murray scored a game-high 20 points. Against Lompoc, Garrettson scored 27, while Casey Dakin scored eight for the Eagles (2-7).

Paso Robles lost its other matchup in the tournament, 57-41, against Hoover. Matt VanDyke had 18 points for the Bearcats.

North County Christian (1-6) fell short in their first game of the tournament against King City, 59-32.

Austin Wiemann and Daniel Katches both led the Crusaders with eight points each. Katches also had six steals and six blocks for North County Christian.

In the battle for seventh place, Coast Union beat North County Christian 49-26. The Crusaders’ top scorer was Daniel Katches with nine points.

Quinten Raethke led the Broncos with 13 points.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande at El Niño/La Niña Tournament

The Eagles (4-1) defeated Northwood 9-6 to capture the tournament crown.

Katie Sverchek had seven goals and Kylie Anderson, named the tournament MVP, had four saves in goal for Arroyo Grande.

The Eagles defeated La Jolla 6-4 in the semifinals, behind Sverchek’s three-goal performance.

Katie Romine, Kim Johnson and Melanie Popovich scored one goal each. Anderson had four saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Nipomo at Grace Brethren Tournament

The Titans (4-3-1) won two games on three goals from Cristina Ozzimo and finished the tournament in fifth place out of 16 teams.

In the fifth place game, Nipomo beat Oak Park 2-1. Ozzimo had a goal in each half, while goalkeeper Brianna Gonzalez had 11 saves.

Earlier Saturday, Ozzimo scored a second-half equalizer after the Titans trailed at halftime 1-0. Nipomo went on to win in penalty kicks. Gonzalez posted 11 saves in that game as well.

Madera South 2, Mission Prep 0

Madera South used a goal in each half to defeat the Royals.

Goalkeepers Ella Moberg and Grace Oeser had eight and three saves, respectively, for Mission Prep (3-3-1).

WRESTLING

Atascadero at Hollister Duals

The Greyhounds won the team title at the Hollister Duals.

Greyhounds Jack Clemmensen, Matt Weir, Seth Burchfield, Dylan Reid, Ty Giovanetti, Matt Ducasse, Andrew Bittle all went undefeated in the event.
