Light-up crosswalks, teen mentoring and homeless services are among the items the Paso Robles City Council will consider for a new batch of federal funding.
The estimated $237,838 in Community Development Block Grants is designed to benefit low-income people, prevent blight and address needs that are believed to threaten the health or welfare of the community.
The needs are greater than the available funding, as the 20 applications received total $640,700. Selections at tonight’s council meeting will become recommendations to be used at a March meeting when the money becomes available. However, anyone in the current application pool can still be considered in March.
Here is who applied:
• City of Paso Robles: Replace damaged sidewalks in Turtle Creek Park, $120,000.
• City of Paso Robles: Install/replace handicapped ramps at various locations on the city’s west side, $60,000; and add lighted crosswalks on the west side, $60,000.
• City of Paso Robles: Further efforts to provide affordable housing to low- and moderate-income households, $15,000.
• City of Paso Robles: Administer Community Development Block Grant-funded activities, $25,000.
• Transitional Food & Shelter: Help buy property in Atascadero for transitional or group housing, $200,000.
• Transitional Food & Shelter: Fund countywide emergency shelters for homeless people who are in need of medical care, $20,000.
• North County Connection Recovery and Resource Center: Help buy property in Atascadero for a nonprofit recovery resource center, $45,000.
• Mission Community Services Corp.: Operate a countywide program to provide small-business training for those with low incomes, $5,000.
• CAPSLO programs: Fund countywide senior health screenings, $2,500; provide another $2,800 for a countywide counseling and child-care program for teen parents.
• Literacy Council: Provide countywide English language classes, $5,000.
• Big Brothers & Big Sisters: Operate a mentoring program for disadvantaged youth countywide, $5,000.
• Boys & Girls Club: Fund after-school programs for youths in the Paso Robles area, $7,000.
• Senior Nutrition of SLO County: Provide hot meals to seniors countywide, $10,000.
• Lifestyles Recovery Center: Fund a drug and alcohol counseling service for low-income adults and youths in Paso Robles, $12,000.
• El Camino Homeless Organization: Fund the homeless shelter and motel vouchers for its Atascadero program that serves the North County, $5,000.
• North County Adaptive Sports & Recreation: Provide sports and recreation services to disabled youths and adults in the North County, $2,500.
• Loaves & Fishes: Provide food to low- and very-low-income people in the Paso Robles area, $7,000.
• Paso Robles Fellowship Development: Purchase food and supplies and fund operating expenses for providing meals, showers and donated clothing to the homeless in the Paso Robles area, $21,900.
