Prep Roundup: Atascadero boys down Morro Bay for third place at Harding basketball tourney

Connor Kim hit a 3-pointer with seconds only remaining, and Atascadero High secured a steal on Morro Bay’s final possession to give the Greyhounds’ boys basketball team a 58-57 victory over the tournament host Pirates in the third-place game of the Harding Invitational on Saturday.

Robbie Berwick and Hayden Mislavsky led the Greyhounds with 18 points each, while Luke Munds had a game-high 19 for Morro Bay.

Elsewhere in the Harding Invitational, Paso Robles split both its games, defeating Chavez 62-33 before losing to Nipomo 52-34.

Rudy Binkele led the Bearcats with 15 points in their victory over Chavez and though it held an 18-11 lead in the first quarter against Nipomo, Paso Robles failed to score more than seven points in each of the last three quarters.

North County Christian 47, Concordia 34

Daniel Katches scored a game-high 22 points and ended up leading the Santa Clarita Tournament with eight blocks in three games, and the Crusaders (1-2) got their first win of the season in the seventh-place game.

Austin Wiemann scored 11 for North County Christian, which had an 11-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and led by nine at the half. Katches had three blocks in Saturday’s game alone.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Arroyo Grande 56, Marin Catholic 36

The Eagles beat Marin Catholic in the championship game of the Marin Catholic Tournament.

Heather Madirgal led Arroyo Grande with 15 points and Brianna Flood scored 13. Emma Weninreich and Lindsey Wolf scored 12 points apiece for the Eagles. Wolf was an all-tournament selection.

Ruth Doser Tournament

Emily Boege scored 15 points and Camille LeBlanc had 14 for Atascadero (1-2) in a 55-49 win over Templeton.

Boege also had four 3-pointers.

The Eagles’ Mary Stewart scored a game-high 19 points, and Lori Stuedemann added 12 for Templeton.

The Greyhounds outscored Templeton 31-22 in the second half.

Elsewhere in the Doser Tournament, Paso Robles defeated Nipomo 49-30 with 12 points from Molly Donovan and 10 from Amani White. White made the all-tournament team.

Despite a game-high 12 points from Mission Prep’s Bri Harvey, the Royals lost to Independent 40-29. Mission Prep entered the fourth quarter with a 27-26 lead but ended the game on the wrong side of a 14-2 run.

Franklin 55, San Luis Obispo 39

San Luis Obispo lost to Franklin in the consolation championship game of the Elk Grove Tournament.

Erica Chandler led the Tigers with 15 points, and Jessica Judge added 12.

The Tigers (1-3) had 34 turnovers and hit just 10 of 26 from the free-throw line.

BOYS SOCCER

Cats and Hounds Tournament

Paso Robles (6-0-2) won the tournament for the first time in its history behind Angel Guevara, who led in scoring in all three of the Bearcats’ victories Saturday.

Guevara scored twice in Paso Robles’ first game to defeat Santiago 2-1, scored once in the Bearcats’1-0 win over Monrovia and tied the score at 1-1 in their championship-game victory over Ventura to send the game to penalty kicks.

With a 6-5 lead in penalty kicks, Bearcats keeper Jesus Gil made the final save to clinch the tournament title. Gil had seven saves for the day, including four in the championship match.

San Luis Obispo (4-1-1) won the silver bracket, first beating Lompoc 3-1. Matthew Connely and Paul Sullivan both scored agoal apiece for the Tigers. Nursing several injuries, Pioneer Valley forfeited to San Luis Obispo in the teams’ final game.

Placing third in the tournament, Arroyo Grande (2-4-1) lost its first game to Nipomo 2-0. Alex Montero had seven saves for the Eagles.

Arroyo Grande beat Morro Bay 3-0 in its second game. Joshua Wilkins, Oscar Munoz and Juan Jazo all scored a goal in the win. Montero had three saves.

In the Eagles’ last game, they beat Mission Prep 6-1. Miguel Padilla and Jazo each scored twice. Also scoring for Arroyo Grande were Munoz and Miguel Fregoso.

Coast Union 7, Santa Clarita Christian 1

The Broncos got a hat trick and an assist from Victor Casas in a season-opening home victory.

Luis DeAlba added two goals, and Diego Pena and Andy Gordon scored one apiece. Oscar Catalan tallied two assists, and Coast Union keeper Juan Leonardo turned away two shots on goal.

WRESTLING

Pete Duca Invitational

Atascadero finished first in the team standings in Nipomo, followed, in order, by Paso Robles, Righetti, Bellermine Prep, Pioneer Valley and Nipomo.

The Titans had 112 points with Brett Kimball finishing first in the heavyweight division. Other top Nipomo wrestlers include Eddie Bausley (120) and Jared Dorado (195) taking fourth, and German Atilano (113) in fifth.

Morro Bay was led by Kent Beecham, who finished fourth at 170. Other top Morro Bay wrestlers included 152-pounder Christian DeLeon taking fifth, and heavyweights Carl Coates and Andrew Unks who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

CROSS COUNTRY

San Luis Obispo’s Christine Hoffmann and Seamus Land placed in the top 24 at the Foot Locker Western Regional and were named to the Western Regional team.

Hoffman finished 19th in the girls seeded 5K race at Mt. San Antonio College, and Land finished 18th in the boys seeded race.

GIRLS SOCCER

Kamanski Classic

After advancing to the semifinals, Mission Prep suffered a 2-0 loss to Kingsburg and a 2-1 loss to McLane on the final day of the tournament to finish fourth overall.

The Royals’ lone goal came from Sydney Rathjens against McLane.
