The Lucia Mar Unified School District has increased the number of spots it will make available for next years’ first ever freshman class at a new school in Nipomo.
Central Coast New Tech High is a small-school program that incorporates high-technology teaching methods -- including ensuring each student has a computer -- and “project-based learning” similar to Cal Poly’s “learn by doing” philosophy.
It is scheduled to open next August on the Nipomo High campus with a class of 125 freshmen. District officials announced Friday that the enrollment has been increased to 150 students to allow more flexibility with schedules and class offerings.
The district will hold its final community meeting on the new school at 6 p.m. Thursday at Nipomo High, 525 N. Thompson Road. For more information on the school, visit www.CentralCoastNewTech.org.
Registration forms are due on Jan. 12.
In related district news, the Lucia Mar Foundation for Education a nonprofit organization formed to support some of the South County district’s programs, including New Tech High, will host a fundraising event Sunday.
Foundation volunteers and Lucia Mar district staff will be on hand to answer questions about programs including New Tech High and an international baccalaureate/ magnet program at Grover Beach Elementary, which will incorporate more technology, fine arts and Spanish into students’ curriculum.
So far, the Lucia Mar Foundation for Innovation has raised about $50,000 in its first fundraising campaign.
The event, a wine and cheese pairing, silent auction and raffle, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at La Perla del Mar, 205 Windward Ave. in Shell Beach.
