Cal Poly Creamery has announced a voluntary recall of its Farmstead Made Eggnog after a sample was found to be contaminated with Escherichia coli. The contamination was discovered Wednesday after routine testing by the Cal Poly Creamery detected the presence of high colony counts of E. coli.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the product, university officials said.
The recalled product is marked with the expiration dates "Dec. 10" and "Dec. 17" printed in blue on the top of the lid and may have been purchased at one of the following retailers:
- Scolari’s Foods in Paso Robles, Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo
- Spencer’s Fresh Markets in Atascadero, Arroyo Grande, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria
- SLO Fresh Market in San Luis Obispo
- Cal Poly Campus Store and Village Market on the Cal Poly Campus in San Luis Obispo
The recalled product includes 917 one-quart bottles code dated Dec. 10, which were distributed Nov. 23 and 11 bottles code dated Dec. 17, which were distributed Nov. 29.
Cal Poly officials said bottles marked with earlier expiration dates are not affected by the recall.
Production of Cal Poly eggnog has been suspended while the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the Cal Poly Creamery continue their investigation as to the cause of the problem.
Cal Poly has engaged an independent laboratory to conduct more analysis to determine the specific strain of E. coli present. Meanwhile, the Cal Poly Creamery is urging customers who have purchased the eggnog dated Dec. 10 and Dec. 17 to return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
