Prep Roundup: Mission Prep, Templeton win at Ruth Doser Tournament

The Mission Prep and Templeton High girls basketball teams were the only county teams to win Thursday during the opening day of Atascadero’s Ruth Doser Tournament.

Mission Prep defeated Nipomo 66-36 in its first-round matchup.

The Royals’ Bri Harvey scored a game-high 19 points as Mission Prep (2-0) used a big third quarter to break open a game that was close at the half. Mission Prep outscored Nipomo 27-10 in the quarter.

“I was really happy about the way our girls came out defensively in the third quarter to put the game away early in the quarter,” Royals coach John Krossa said. “We forced turnovers that led to fastbreaks.”

Jenna Dunbar had 14 points, and Kaylee Williams added 12 for Mission Prep.

Templeton cruised its matchup against Santa Maria, defeating the Saints 81-34.

Lauren Stuedemann scored 22 points and recorded eight assists to lead Templeton (1-1). Marrisa Torres scored 21, and Mari Stewart grabbed 13 boards to go with her eight points for Templeton.

Atascadero (0-1) fell to Garcas 59-51.

Emily Boege scored a team-high 15 to lead the Greyhounds. Mary Kate Evans added 13 for Atascadero.

Paso Robles fell short in its first-round game, falling to Independence 48-24.

Amani White and Molly Donovan each scored 11 points for the Bearcats (1-1). Paso Robles scored 12 first- quarter points, but only scored 12 points for the rest of the game against the Falcons.

The Bearcats will play Templeton in their next game today.

St. Mary’s 62, Arroyo Grande 48

Emma Weinreich scored 15 points, Lindsey Wolf scored 14 and Brianna Flood added 12 for the Eagles (0-1), who lost in their first game at the Marin Catholic Tournament in Kentfield.

Arroyo Grande held a 26-25 halftime lead but was outscored 37-22 the rest of the way.

The Eagles play Moreau Catholic at 5 tonight in their next game of the tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Morro Bay Ted Harding Invitational

The Pirates (1-1) opened tournament play with a big win on their home court, defeating Chavez 70-44.

Morro Bay outscored Chavez 23-8 in the second quarter to blow the game open.

Edward Griley led Morro Bay with a game-high 19 points to go with 10 rebounds. Bryce Owens scored 15 points, and Scott Milligan supplied eight points and 14 boards for the Pirates in the victory.

After jumping out to 35-15 halftime lead, Atascadero (1-0) held off a late Independence rally to secure the 62-56 victory in its first game.

The Falcons outscored the Greyhounds 21-12 in the final frame, and 41-27 in the second half, but Atascadero’s early scoring, including five first-half 3-pointers, helped them thwart the comeback bid by Independence.

Hayden Mislavsky scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds will play again tonight against Pioneer Valley.

Nipomo lost its matchup with Pioneer Valley 52-43. Ryan McNeil had 15 points, and Tyler Moore had 10 points for the Titans (0-1), who will face Independence today.

Templeton fell behind early and never recovered in its game with Fallbrook, losing 67-26.

Eric Fragione led Templeton with nine points. Clark Burton added six points, and Matt Ehrke had a team-high five rebounds. The Eagles will face Davis today.

Paso Robles (0-1) lost a close one to North Bakersfield 41-40 when a Bearcat field-goal attempt fell short at the buzzer. Paso Robles will play the loser of the Villa Park-Nevada Union game today.

Santa Clarita Christian 44, North County Christian 27

Jonathon Katches scored a team-high nine points in the Crusaders’ first-round loss to the host Cardinals in the Santa Clarita Christian Tournament.

Daniel Katches scored eight, and Austin Wiemann added six for North County Christian (0-1).

BOYS SOCCER

San Luis Obispo 3, Templeton 0

Matthew Connely scored twice for the Tigers (1-0-1), first off an assist by Travis Caldwell and again in the ninth on a free kick, to lead San Luis Obispo past the Eagles at home.

Scott Allis added an unassisted goal for the Tigers.

Santa Maria 3, Atascadero 1

Robert Orozco had the lone goal for the Greyhounds (0-2) when he tied the score at 1 in the first half.

However, the Saints scored to go up 2-1 at half and again in the second to halt any chance of an Atascadero comeback.

David Hernandez had eight saves in goal for the Greyhounds.

Righetti 3, Nipomo 1

Righetti turned a close 1-0 game at halftime into a comfortable win with two goals back-to-back in the 56th and 57th minutes.

Nipomo (0-1-1) averted the shutout with a Ben Jimenez goal with two minutes left. Minutes after Nipomo missed a penalty kick opportunity, Jonathan Gomez crossed the ball to Jimenez, who placed the ball in the upper right corner of the goal from 20 yards out.

Santa Ynez 3, Arroyo Grande 1

The Pirates scored two quick first-half goals and it was enough to hold off the Eagles (0-2).

Oscar Munoz scored off a direct kick in the 59th minute to bring the deficit to one goal, but Santa Ynez scored again with 10 minutes remaining.

Alex Motero made five saves for Arroyo Grande.

GIRLS SOCCER

Atascadero 6, Santa Maria 0

Rhiannon Dudley, Rachel Andrade and Christine Curtis scored two goals apiece as the Greyhounds cruised to a road victory.

Olivia Dobbs and Hannah McMillan added two assists each for Atascadero.

San Luis Obispo 7, Templeton 1

Brady Candaele recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Tigers (2-0) to a road victory over the Eagles.

Five different players had goals for San Luis Obispo.

Arroyo Grande 2, Santa Ynez 0

Laura Greene of Arroyo Grande (2-0) tallied the first goal in the first minute of the game after the Pirates misplayed the opening kickoff, leading to an Eagles corner kick.

Arroyo Grande second its second goal when Hannah Chaneless assisted Mallory Flatebo’s goal.

Goalie Mikayla Allen posted a shutout for the Eagles with four saves.

Righetti 2, Nipomo 0

Righetti’s Veronica Cortes broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute off a direct kick. Two minutes later, Ivy Diego doubled the lead on a goal assisted by Michaela Olney.

Brianna Gonzalez of Nipomo (1-2) had nine saves.

Paso Robles 5, Morro Bay 0
