After a strong offensive second-quarter showing and a defensive-minded fourth-quarter effort, the Nipomo High girls water polo team recorded a 12-6 home victory over San Luis Obispo in Wednesday’s nonleague match to improve to 2-0 overall.
Nipomo’s Sara Clark and Shanae Lauridsen exploded for five goals apiece, and Becky Emrick added two more for the Titans, who also got 13 saves from goalie Sammi Baker.

For San Luis Obispo, Elizabeth Waddell and Kacie Gin each finished with two goals, and goalie Zoe Berkowitz collected seven saves. Becca Teng and Abby Hollister each added a goal for the Tigers.
Nipomo expanded a 3-1 lead after the first quarter to 7-3 at halftime. The Titans then were outscored 3-2 in the third quarter before turning their focus to defense and holding San Luis Obispo scoreless the rest of the way.
“With Sammi anchoring, I thought the defense played well,” Nipomo coach Justin Jewell said. “I thought our counterattack was good.”
The Bearcats had eight pins, two technical falls and one major decision in the season-opening dual match with Morro Bay, which got pins from Elijah Gacad (106 pounds) and Josh Richmond (138).
Kevin Garcia, who earned one of the team’s technical falls at 152, and Austin Yarborough, a first-year wrestler who won with a major decision at 182, highlighted the Paso Robles victory.
“All the kids wrestled well,” said Paso Robles coach Chris Monteiro, whose team won 11 of the 14 matches. “They went after their wrestler, even if they were losing. It was a good start to the season.”
Powered by Cristina Plasencia’s four goals, the Broncos blasted Dunn in the season opener. Karla Cisernos contributed a pair of scores for the Broncos, who also had goals from Morgan May and Karla Soto.
