A Denny’s restaurant in San Luis Obispo suffered more extensive damage from an Oct. 13 fire than originally thought, the owner said, and won’t reopen until sometime next year.
Restaurant owner Ali Tabrizi said he had hoped to be able to reopen the Denny’s on Madonna Road before the end of the year, but now that doesn’t seem likely. “We have to rebuild basically everything,” Tabrizi said. “It’s going to be all new. But it will take more time than we thought.”
He did not give a specific repair cost, but said, “It will be expensive.” Tabrizi hopes work will be completed in the first quarter of 2012.
According to the San Luis Obispo Fire Department, a gasoline can stored in an electrical room with a water heater and an electrical panel sparked the October fire.
The flames were contained in the restaurant’s attic but still caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and left as many as 40 employees out of work.
Tabrizi, who owns Denny’s franchises from Santa Maria to King City, said he has placed several employees in temporary positions at his other restaurants.
