Rabbi Scott Corngold of Congregation Beth David in San Luis Obispo died over the weekend, the synagogues leaders announced to its members.
They wrote in a brief e-mail that Corngolds family had contacted members of the congregation with the news, but that they had no other information as of Sunday.
The congregations board would be meeting today to plan a memorial service, according to the e-mail.
Corngold came to the congregation in July 2009 following the retirement of Rabbi Emeritus Norman Mendel.
He had submitted his resignation from the Jewish congregation on Nov. 20, citing personal reasons, according to an e-mail announcement to members last week.
Mendel and Para Rabbinic Fellow Jared Sharon have agreed to assist in the short term, according to synagogue leaders. The search for a permanent leader is expected to take several months.
