David Hanson scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Cal Poly mens basketball team to a 62-61 victory Friday over Morgan State at the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas.
The Mustangs were outscored 7-0 in the final two minutes, but Morgan State forward Ali Ameer missed two free throws with 1.4 seconds left on the clock to give Cal Poly (3-2) the narrow win after a 23-point loss at UNLV on Tuesday.
Amaurys Fermin and Will Taylor scored 12 points apiece for the Mustangs, and former Morro Bay standout Dylan Royer hit three 3-pointers in the game, including one with five seconds left in the first half that gave Cal Poly a 31-30 lead at the break.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 41-34 early in the second, but a 16-7 run over the next eight minutes by the Bears gave Morgan State a 50-48 lead.
However, two Royer 3-pointers and one each from Fermin and Hanson pushed the Cal Poly lead to 62-54.
Junior guard Drake Uu had a team-high six rebounds for the Mustangs. Cal Poly shot a season high 90.9 percent (10 of 11) from the free-throw line in the win.
The Mustangs will wrap up play in the Las Vegas tournament with a 2 p.m. game today against Mississippi Valley State.
