A 28-year-old San Jose man was found mentally competent today to assist in his own defense in an alleged homicide of a Paso Robles resident in March.
John Frederick Woody was arrested in connection with the death of 46-year-old Martin McWilliams at Paso Robles Laundromat in the 2800 block of Spring Street on March 6.

Doctors initially found Woody incompetent to stand trial in the case. Woody has been undergoing mental health treatment.
Woody was arrested after Paso Robles police received a report that Atascadero officers had detained a man matching the suspect’s description. He had been acting suspiciously in a bank on the 7300 block of El Camino Real in Atascadero.
A preliminary hearing before Judge Michael Duffy is scheduled for Jan. 19.
