People who have recently bought property are being warned against a scam.

Julie Rodewald, the San Luis Obispo County clerkrecorder, says they should ignore solicitations that promise to provide a “property profile” of their recently purchased property at a cost of $89 from a company called Local Records Office.

The “profile,” Rodewald says, includes a copy of the deed and information about the purchaser’s new neighborhood.

The solicitation can deceive new owners into thinking it is part of the normal process, she wrote in a news release.

As part of the deed-recording process, the new owner of the property will receive the original deed from the Clerk-Recorder’s Office via mail within three to four weeks of the recording date, Rodewald wrote.

After that, a copy can be obtained from the Clerk-Recorder’s Office at any time, she said. The fee depends on the number of pages and is typically in the $3 to $5 range.
