The Cuesta College volleyball team swept visiting L.A. Mission 25-8, 25-21, 25-13 in its season finale Thursday, securing third place in the Western State Conference for the fourth consecutive year.
Tess Gilkey had a game-high 11 kills, Ashlan Cate had a team-high 11 digs and Ensely Allmon had 24 assists for Cuesta (12--8, 8-4 WSC).
The Cougars hope to receive one of the 16 playoff spots that will be handed out Saturday. They have not reached the postseason since 2007.
Cuesta women's basketball team falls to Taft College
The Cuesta College womens basketball team fell 76-67 on the road at Taft College.
The Cougars (2-2), who were playing without Courtney Chadwick (fractured wrist) and Sadie Folk (flu), were down by as much as 10 early in the game before rallying to tie the score in the final minute.
However, Taft shot 10 of 11 from the free-throw line the rest of the way to blow the game open and sink Cuestas comeback bid.
Katy Sheldon led the Cougars with 15 points and 11 rebounds despite fouling out with 10 minutes left in the game. Anika Bauermeister and Alyssa Palma added 14 apiece for Cuesta.
The Cougars will play Reedley on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Cuesta College.
Cal Poly women's tennis team signs two players
The Cal Poly womens tennis team has announced the national letter of intent signings of Sophia Bott (San Clem-ente High) and Louise Oxnevad (Te Kura Pounamu School in Queensland, New Zealand).
Bott, who was Oregons Division 6A state champion as a sophomore in high school, was a South Coast League singles finalist the past two seasons for San Clemente.
Oxnevard was once ranked as high as the No. 3 singles player in New Zealand and captured the doubles title and was the singles runner-up at the 2010 New Zealand Junior Championships.
