A series of storms are forecast to bring rain to San Luis Obispo County, starting today and continuing into Thanksgiving Day.
The storm arriving today will not pack much more than sprinkles, and much of the area wont even get wet, local weather expert John Lindsey said. The National Weather Service says just a 20 percent chance of rain is expected.
However, today will be unseasonably cool, with the highs countywide only in the 50s to low 60s, and a strong wind this afternoon will make it feel even colder.
Lindsey, who for more than 20 years has forecast weather along the Central Coast, said Saturday will remain cool and cloudy. Big waves will also break on the coast on Saturday. Lindsey said waves will be 10 to 12 feet high, the result of a vigorous storm that blew several days ago off Alaska.
A second storm arrives Sunday and will bring a better chance of rain. Lindsey foresees amounts ranging from 0.25 to 0.75 of an inch; the Weather Service forecasts a 60 percent chance of rain, with heavy downpours at times.
Clearing may occur Sunday night, leading to a cold start to Monday in the North County, with the low near freezing that morning. Dry weather returns for Monday and Tuesday, and then clouds return Wednesday.
The third storm is expected Wednesday night and will remain into Thanksgiving. A vigorous cold front will march down the California coastline, with 1 to 2 inches possible, said Lindsey.
He cautioned that conditions could change and the storm may not develop as computer models now suggest. Forecasts will be updated as the holiday draws near.
Any rain would help the county achieve normal precipitation. San Luis Obispo averages 2.5 inches for the month of November, but so far this month the official weather station at Cal Poly has received just 0.98 inches, Lindsey said.
