Pismo Beach City Councilman Ed Waage has announced that he will run for county supervisor against Adam Hill in the 3rd District next year.
Waage has scheduled a press conference to formally launch his campaign at noon Thursday in front of the old county courthouse on Osos Street in downtown San Luis Obispo, around the corner from where Occupy SLO protesters remain encamped.

Waage, 69, has spent three years on the Pismo Beach Council, following four years on the city’s Planning Commission. He is a chemist and retired from Diablo Canyon power plant’s emergency planning program in 2000.
Waage said he and his colleagues in Pismo Beach have done a good job, and he wants to move to a larger stage.
He is particularly concerned about some of the county’s lesser-known policy-making bodies on which supervisors sit, such as the Integrated Waste Management Board and the Air Pollution Control District.
The waste management board has been mulling a ban on plastic bags at stores countywide, and the air pollution district has been trying to get a handle on dust and sand from the Oceano Dunes that blow on to Nipomo Mesa and, Mesa residents say, create a health hazard.
Waage has emerged as an ally of those who question the science behind the air pollution district. He also has criticized what he calls the board’s lack of transparency.
In a news release, Waage wrote, “Our county needs someone who will protect its character while planning for responsible growth and economic development to create stable jobs.
“After receiving an abundance of support from the community and encouragement from my family, I have chosen to seek election to the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors,” Waage said.
Hill said he welcomes the challenge and looks forward to running on his record. He said he and his fellow supervisors have done important work on pension reform, economic development, solar projects, helping the homeless and other initiatives.
The 3rd District includes Grover Beach, Avila Beach, Pismo Beach and parts of San Luis Obispo.
Two of the other four supervisor districts also have an election in 2012.
Incumbent Jim Patterson faces a challenge from Debbie Arnold in the 5th District, and incumbent Frank Mecham is so far unopposed in his bid for a second term serving the 1st District.
