Ervin's scores 33 for Cal Poly women in basketball loss to Oregon

Sophomore Jonae Ervin scored a career-high 33 points, senior Kristina Santiago scored 19 in her first game back from an ACL tear that sidelined her all of last year, but the Cal Poly women’s basketball team fell to Oregon 102-93 in both team’s season opener.

Ervin hit 11-of-13 shots from the floor, including 5-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. Junior Kayla Griffin scored 17 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, seven assists and six steals, and Ashlee Burns scored 15 points.

The Mustangs took an 11-6 lead off a jumper by Santiago, and then expanded that lead to eight points with 12:50 left in the first half.

The Mustangs made it as much as an eight-point lead after a 3-pointer by Kristen Ale, but Oregon found its grove and closed the half on a 30-10 run to take a 49-37 lead at the break.

Ariana Elegado cut that lead to eight after she hit a layup five minutes into the second half, and Santiago made it 77-72 with 9:16 left in the game, but the Mustangs would get no closer down the stretch.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Cuesta 81, West Hills 79

Freshman Jeremy Landenbergue hit the game-winning basket with three seconds left on the clock to propel Cuesta to its eighth championship at the Rabobank Tournament.

Malte Kramer posted a team-high 32 points with seven 3-pointers and Calen Coleman added 22 for Cuesta, which rallied from a 42-32 deficit at half time to grab a two-point win.

Landenbergue also had eight points in the victory.

CROSS COUNTRY Cal Poly men’s team earn at-large NCAA bid, two women selected

The Cal Poly men’s cross country team was one of two west region schools to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, while Leanne Fogg and true freshman Meghan Breadmore were selected to compete as individuals on the women’s side.

It is the first time anyone from the Cal Poly women’s program has advanced to the championship since the Mustangs made the jumpto Division I in 1994.

For the men, the berth marks the seventh time the Mustangs have made it to the championship, and the 13th time the team or an individual has been selected.

FOOTBALL Romanelli named Great West Offensive Player of the Week

Senior fullback and former Templeton High standout Jake Romanelli was named Great West Conference offensive player of the week after setting career-highs with 36 carries and 179 yards in the Mustangs’ triple-overtime 53-51 loss to Eastern Washington on Saturday.

Romanelli, who scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, has five 100-yard rushing games this year.

WRESTLING Cal Poly at Cowboy Open

Boris Novachkov and Ryan DesRoches both won titles in the Cowboy Open hosted by the University of Wyoming on Saturday.

Novachkov won the 141-pound title with a 2-1 decision over Josh Strait of Boise State. He had two technical falls, one of 18-3 and one of 27-1, and a 6-5 decision over Dalton Jensen of Nebraska-Kearney to get to the championship final.

DesRoches defeated Wyoming’s Shane Woods 3-2 to win the 175-pound championship. He also posted a 2-1 victory over Dallas Hintz of Wyoming, a 12-10 win over Jared Miller of Montana State-Northern and a 5-3 overtime decision over Wyoming’s Patrick Martinez.

Freshman Dominic Kastl won three matches to place second at 165 pounds, losing to Wyoming’s Shane Onufer 7-1 in the final.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL UCSB 3, Cal Poly 0

After Cal Poly’s five-set win over UC Santa Barbara earlier this year, the Mustangs fell to the Gauchos 25-15, 25-22, 25-21 on Saturday. Jennifer Keddy led the Mustangs with 18 kills, and both Catie Smith and Kristina Graven had five.

Smith had 17 digs, Lauren Law had 15 and Sarah Cawrse had 11 to go with her 30 assists.

WOMEN’S TENNIS Cal Poly at Bulldog Classic

Kathryn Webb advanced to the semifinals of the A Flight singles bracket during Cal Poly’s second day at the Bulldog Classic on Saturday. Webb defeated Portland State’s Megan Govi, 6-1, 6-1, in the Round of 16 and then advanced through the quarterfinals after Washington’s Samantha Smith withdrew due to illness.

Junior Alexa Lee lost her match in the Round of 16, 6-3, 6-3, to San Jose State’s Chau Troung.

In the B Flight, Jocelyn Davis lost to Washington’s Adrijan Pavlovic, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2, and Ane McPike lost to Nevada’s Juliette Legendre 7-5, 7-6. Freshman Ireen Kuipers withdrew due to an injury in her match against Isadora Bush.
