Hasay repeats as West Region champ

Jordan Hasay repeated as the NCAA’s West Regional individual women’s cross country champion, and the Cal Poly men’s and women’s teams also had solid performances Saturday at Stanford’s golf course.

Hasay, a Mission Prep grad from Arroyo Grande who’s now a junior for Oregon, won the 6K race in 19 minutes, 44 seconds after she outkicked the competition down the last hill.

In the process, she became the second Oregon woman to win two West Regional titles, and the first to accomplish the feat in 23 years, as well as the first to do it back-to-back.

“It was a great race by Jordan,” Ducks coach Vin Lananna said in a news release.

The Cal Poly men’s team, which entered the race seeded fifth, finished third with 122 points, strengthening its chances for an at-large bid to the national championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Daniel Gonia led Cal Poly by placing ninth individually, completing the 10K course in 29 minutes, 28 seconds. All six of Cal Poly’s other runners also finished in the top 47.

“Everybody ran an outstanding race today,” Mustangs coach Mark Conover said in a news release. “They ran like they really wanted to show something today. They used a lot of cohesiveness in the race, showing desire and heart.”

Former Nipomo High standout Andrew Garcia, now at Long Beach State, came in 59th place at 30:43.

The Cal Poly women’s squad also out-performed its seed (14th), finishing in ninth place.

Cal Poly’s Leanne Fogg finished in 16th place with a time of 20:45, and Meghan Breadmore was 17th at 20:47.

“I’m very proud of how the women ran today,” Conover said. “They really stepped it up from their conference showing and showed they can compete with the best.

“With Leanne and Meghan’s outstanding showing, they have put themselves in a place to be considered for individual at-large selection,” he said.

Another former Mission Prep standout, UCLA freshman Annie Mooney, finished 96th in the women’s race at 22:08.

The national championship fields will be announced today.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Cuesta 62, West Valley 57

Calen Coleman had a team-high 18 points and a game-high 18 rebounds to lead the Cougars (2-0) to a win in the semifinals of the Rabobank Tournament.

Plamen Hristov had 10 points for Cuesta, and Denis Rylko and Luis Marrero had nine each in the win.

The Cougars will face West Hills in the championship game today at 5 p.m. at Cuesta College.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Cuesta 71, Palomar 50

The Cougars pulled away after taking a 30-29 halftime lead at the Orange Coast Tournament.

“Our defensive pressure got really good in the second half,” coach Ron Barba said. “I think that was the difference.”

Former Atascadero High star Alyssa Palma had 15 points and 14 rebounds, former Paso Robles standout Kati Sheldon had 13 points and 14 boards, and Morro Bay graduate Aria Johnson scored 13 points to go with seven rebounds for Cuesta (1-1).

SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Mustangs took a commanding lead on the first day of the Cal Poly Shootout after winning 15 of the 16 women’s swimming and diving events at the Anderson Aquatic Center.

Cal Poly tallied 1,064.5 points, Concordia was second with 496 points, followed by Pepperdine with 413.5, and Azusa Pacific with 393.

The Mustangs’ Gloria Benefield, Andrea Viogt, and Kylie France each won two events. Benefield placed first in the 100 backstroke (57.08 seconds) and 200 backstroke (2 minutes, 2.03 seconds), Voigt won the 200 freestyle (1:55.84) and 100 freestyle (53.76), and France took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.86) and 400 individual medley (4:29.73).

The Cal Poly men’s team is also in first with 262 points, while Concordia is in second with 204 points, and Fresno Pacific in third with 168.

Konrad Antoniuk won the 1,650 freestyle (16:00.22), Christian Renfro took the 200 freestyle (1:41,25), Jimmy Deiparine won the 100 breaststroke (59.80), and diver Tony Reaper was the top finisher in the one-meter event (276.35).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Cal Poly 3, UC Riverside 0

In its last home match of the regular season, Cal Poly (11-15, 6-7 BWC) defeated UC Riverside in straight sets 25-10, 25-21, 25-15.

Cal Poly’s Jennifer Keddy led all scorers with 15 kills. Megan McConnell added six kills and three aces, while Catie Smith tallied seven kills and five digs.
