Mission Prep quarterback Tyler Baty threw for 265 yards and three touchdown passes as the Royals (8-2) cruised to a 33-6 victory over Xavier Prep on Friday in their season finale on the road.
Mission Prep was able to shake off five fumbles, including three lost, because of its solid defense, which forced three turnovers and held Xavier Prep to 156 yards of total offense.
Calvin Levisay returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown to break the game open at 20-6 near the end of the first half. The Royals were able to get the ball back quickly and scored another touchdown before halftime to turn a close game into a rout.
Michael Cardwell led Mission Prep in rushing with 46 yards and a touchdown. Joey Hall had 92 yards on four catches, most of which came on a 53-yard score in the fourth quarter. Patrick Laird had the other big offensive scoring play when he caught a Baty pass for a 73-yard touchdown. Laird finished with three catches for 85 yards in the game.
Mission Prep now must wait to see if it is invited to the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Independent schools must have a minimum .800 winning percentage to be considered for the playoffs, which will be announced Sunday.
