Friday Football | Arroyo Grande finishes perfect in PAC 7 play

Arroyo Grande High showed why it is the undisputed PAC 7 football champions with a 42-12 win over San Luis Obispo tonight in which the mercy running-clock rule was instituted in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles (9-1, 6-0) ran for six touchdowns by five different players as they won their ninth straight game since a season-opening loss to Lompoc.

Henry Adelman had the only score of the fourth quarter for the Eagles on a 35-yard run with 10:12 to go. San Luis Obispo responded with a score late when Trevor McGuire had a 7-yard touchdown catch from Garret Giovannelli.

Seth Jacobs had two rushing touchdowns for the Eagles. In a scary moment for Arroyo Grande as it looks forward to the playoffs, Garrett Owens was hurt in the fourth quarter, but he was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Unable to sustain momentum or stop Arroyo Grande’s drives, San Luis Obispo’s hopes for a share of the PAC 7 league title are all but over. The Eagles lead 35-6 heading into the final quarter of tonight's football game.

Seth Jacobs’ second rushing touchdown of the game put the Eagles up 28-6 with 7:29 to go in the quarter. After San Luis Obispo turned the ball over on downs, Arroyo Grande converted on the short field with a 15-yard touchdown run by Brent VanderVeen.

In the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, Garrett Owens thwarted any hopes the Tigers had of making the game close with an interception for Arroyo Grande.

Seth Jacobs scored Arroyo Grande’s third rushing touchdown of the first half as the Eagles lead at halftime over San Luis Obispo 21-6.

Jacobs' 11-yard run with 6:32 to go in the half extended the lead to 21-0 before Jacob Flores rushed in from 1 yard out with 1:32 to go in the first half for San Luis Obispo. The extra point was blocked.

The Eagles’ rushing game has been the story of the first half as the Eagles have 190 yards on the ground on 22 carries. Gabe Deleon leads the balanced attack with 48 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Garrett Owens has 43 yards and a touchdown, Brent VanderVeen has 42 rushing yards and Jacobs has 41 yards and a touchdown.

Flores has 35 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers. Erick Cordova has a team-high 38 rushing yards. The passing game has struggled as Garret Giovannelli is 3 for 7 for 57 yards and an interception.

PASO ROBLES 14, ATASCADERO 13

Paso Robles’ Kevan Garcia made two huge plays to overshadow rivalry counterpart Deontae Barnes of Atascadero, and the Bearcats went into the half of the football season finale with a lead on the Greyhounds.

With Atascadero (6-3, 3-2 PAC 7) threatening to go up by two scores, Garcia intercepted a pass in the end zone by Greyhounds quarterback Robert Berwick, then ran 80 yards for the go-ahead score on the very next play.

On his first carry of the game, Garcia’s touchdown helped give the Bearcats their first lead with 41 seconds left in the second quarter.

The Greyhounds had a first-and-goal at the 9-yard line when Berwick scrambled away from a sack. Rolling right, he threw a pass between two Paso Robles defenders that Garcia caught for a touchback.

On the first play of the game, Barnes returned the opening kick 93 yards for a touchdown. After the Bearcats (2-7, 1-5 PAC 7) turned the ball over on a bobbled punt snap deep in Paso Robles territory, Barnes sprinted to the pylon for a 1-yard touchdown that gave Atascadero a 13-0 lead with 1:17 left in the first quarter.

Max Blanton had the other score for the Bearcats, taking a short pass 48 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

First-quarter update: In a drizzly game at Doug Hitchen Stadium tonight, Arroyo Grande High leads San Luis Obispo 14-0 after the first quarter in a PAC 7 football game.

Gabe Deleon scored on a 31-yard run with 8:31 to go in the quarter. Garrett Owens had a 32-yard scoring run right before the end of the quarter.

The Tigers had one scoring chance in the quarter, but Garret Giovannelli threw an interception at the goal line. Matt Willkomm returned it to the Eagles’ 23-yard line. San Luis Obispo also had another turnover when they fumbled with under a minute to go in the quarter, setting up the second Eagles’ touchdown.

Arroyo Grande (8-1, 5-0) would finish undefeated in the PAC 7 with a win. San Luis Obispo (7-2, 4-1) could tie the Eagles for the PAC 7 title if it wins.
