New development in Paso Robles will pay larger sewer connection fees starting in January as part of a two-part funding approach to rebuild the city’s aging wastewater treatment plant. The connection fee hikes will be phased in over five years, going from $5,467 in January to $10,900 by January 2014.
The method used to calculate the connection fees will also be re-examined within two years after developers expressed concerns at several recent Paso Robles City Council meetings.
Increased sewer bills for residential and business users will also fund the new plant, estimated to cost $49.6 million in 2014 when accounting for inflation.
The council is slated to take the first step of adopting the rate hikes at its Tuesday meeting, if a majority of the city’s 9,972 ratepayers do not protest the increases.
The increases would then show up on users’ monthly bills beginning July 2012.
The new user rates would drop the current fixed rate of $25.86 and increase a typical household bill, which generates seven units of sewage per month, to about $54 per month by 2016. A unit is 748 gallons.
