Prep Roundup: Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo roll in girls tennis playoff openers

The Arroyo Grande High girls tennis team defeated visiting Long Beach Poly 17-1 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3 first-round playoff matchup Thursday.

Sophie Whittle, the PAC 7 singles champion, swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 for the Eagles (22-1), and teammate Alexis Flood swept 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Lauren Hayashi, who made it to the PAC 7 singles semifinals, won 6-1, 6-0 in her two sets.

In doubles, sisters Stephani and Amber Domako won 6-2, 6-2, and Brianna Flood and Melina Rodgers teamed up to win 6-3, 6-1 for Arroyo Grande.

The Eagles will face either Rio Mesa or J.W. North at 2 p.m. Saturday.

San Luis Obispo 13, Warren 5

With the win over the Downey school that came into the postseason with a 17-2 record, the Tigers (15-3) moved on to face either Malibu or Camarillo on Saturday.

They led 6-0 after the opening round Thursday.

“It was a little bit of an uncertainty to begin with,” San Luis Obispo coach Gary Etheredge said, but the first-round success “really kind of set the tone for the match.”

Tori Troesch swept 6-0, 6-3, 6-0, and Abigail Will also won her two sets, 6-3, 6-4.

India Hoffman and Darla Berkefeld swept 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 in doubles, and Joelle Lewis and Lauren Hutkin won 6-2, 6-2.

Before the match started, Troesch signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Portland. The Pilots play in the West Coast Conference.

BOYS WATER POLO

Nipomo 20, Westminster 8

Cole Holloway scored seven goals, Marc Baker scored six, and Kirk Wilenius had 15 saves in goal for the Titans (24-4) in their dominant first-round victory in the Division 7 playoffs.

J.W. Dobbe had two goals, and five Titans scored one apiece in the home win. Luke Buchanan added five second-half saves for Nipomo.

The Titans will face Citrus Valley at home on Saturday in the second round.

Redlands East Valley 15, Arroyo Grande 12

Cisco Bass scored four goals, but the Eagles (19-13) lost in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs.

Nick Ruiz scored three goals, Tanner Sandman scored two, and Dennis Meffert and Jack Empey scored one goal for Arroyo Grande in the loss. Chandler Mankins and Clint Doucette combined for 10 saves in goal.

Royal 23, Paso Robles 5

The Bearcats (14-16) fell in the Division 4 first round.

Ricky Lloyd had two goals and three other Paso Robles players had one goal each.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Beckman 3, San Luis Obispo 0

The Tigers (28-7) were swept by the Patriots, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 in the second round of the Division 1A playoffs.

San Luis Obispo’s Amelia Brown had nine kills, and Maggie Eppright had 23 assists. Jessica Chellsen had a team-high 18 digs for the Tigers.

Coastal Christian 3, Calvary Baptist 0

The Conquerors (15-2) cruised to a 25-7, 25-7, 25-13 victory in the second round of the Division 5A playoffs.

Leslie Henry led Coastal Christian with 18 kills, and Koral Wright had a team-high 27 digs. JoAnn Lindstaedt had 21 assists, and Roni Garrison had seven aces for the Conquerors, who will face either Trona or AGBU of Canoga Park on the road Saturday.

Coast Union 3, University Prep 0

The Broncos (15-5) swept 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 in the second round of the Division 5A playoffs.

Sophie Flemion had 22 assists, Nicky Ortiz had six kills, Amy Avina had five kills, and Karla Soto had five kills and seven aces for Coast Union.

The Broncos will play Pacific Lutheran on the road at 5 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Firebaugh 3, Shandon 0

The Outlaws (11-8) lost their second-round Division 5A playoff match 25-9, 25-16, 25-13.

Dontavia Henderson had 10 kills and two blocks while Kayla Celis had seven kills and 15 digs. Leticia Muniz had 18 assists and three aces for Shandon.

SOFTBALL

Hufstetler signs with San Jose State

Atascadero senior Jessie Hufstetler signed a letter of intent Thursday to continue her career at San Jose State, Greyhounds athletic director Sam DeRose said.

Hufstetler, a Tribune all-county first-team choice in each of the past two years, batted .512 with a PAC 7-leading five home runs as a junior catcher.

Her 49 RBI a year ago are believed to be a modern single-season record for the league.

She chose the Spartans over a handful of other Division I programs.

FOOTBALL

Morro Bay 28, Santa Maria 14

The Pirates (1-9, 1-5 LPL) ran all over the visiting Saints, picking up their first win of the year in their season finale at home.

Both Tristan Collins (26 rushes, 191 yards, three total touchdowns) and Jordan Bray (9 for 139) topped the century mark for Morro Bay, and Dan Beavers was 5-of-11 passing for 75 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
