A suspicious object found in a swimming pool at an Atascadero apartment complex last week that led to an evacuation of residents turned out to be a container of hydrogen peroxide.
The San Luis Obispo County Bomb Task Force used a robot to open the container to do further tests, according to a news release issued by Atascadero Fire Capt. Bill White.
“Once the object was opened, hazardous materials crews were able to safely remove the chemical, which turned out to be hydrogen peroxide from the apartment complex,” White said in the release.
The FBI was called to the scene because of the potential for the incident to be a domestic terrorist threat, according to authorities.
“We must assume the worst-case scenario on these types of incidents,” said Atascadero Fire Capt. Tom Peterson and the San Luis Obispo County Regional Hazardous Materials team manager in a news release. “The substance and packaging were unusual and of great concern until proper identification could be made.”
