The Cuesta College men’s water polo team held a 6-4 lead at the half and kept that momentum rolling in the third and fourth quarters, defeating Los Angeles Valley 10-7 in the Western State Conference championship game Saturday.
Erick Marsh led the Cougars (22-10) with five goals, Matt Jiancanelli scored three and Luka Vukomanovic scored two.

Marsh had one assist to become Cuesta’s all-time leader in assists with 109.
The No. 1-seeded Cougars (19-12) were upset at the WSC championships and now must wait to see if they get into the Southern California playoffs, which start next weekend.
Bailey Kelley scored with four seconds to go in regulation to force overtime for Cuesta. Erin Hasenkamp and Alexandria Bernard each scored two goals. Carly Glogovac and Alex O’Connor netted the other two Cougars goals.
Loren Kasenberg made 10 saves in a losing effort.
Gloria Benefield helped Cal Poly down UC Santa Barbara on the women’s side, but Cal Poly fell to the Gauchos on the men’s side.
Benefield won the 100-yard backstroke (56.91 seconds) and 200 backstroke (2 minutes, 1.01 seconds) and swam the third leg on Cal Poly’s first-place 200 medley relay team (1:46.62).
Lacey Buck also won two events for the women, placing first in the 500 freestyle (4:58.83) and 1,000 freestyle (10:06.37).
Sami McIntyre won both diving events, scoring 250.80 points off the 1-meter board and 262.35 off the 3-meter board.
Sophomore Konrad Antoniuk won two events for the men, placing first in the 500 freestyle (4:39.87) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:38.74).

Ryan Smith finished as runner-up in the 197-pound weight class when he lost by fall in the championship match.
Sean Dougherty (184) and Kelan Bragg (285) each finished in fourth place. Dougherty lost a 5-3 decision in the consolation match, and Bragg lost 7-2.
The Cougars finished in seventh place in the team standings.
Matt Correa won the 125-pound division for Cuesta. Bradley Beuadette had the next-best Cougar finish in sixth place.
Cal Poly forced UC Irvine into a deciding fifth set but couldn’t clinch the game winner as the Mustangs (10-15, 5-7 Big West Conference) fell 27-29, 25-18, 29-27, 21-25, 15-11.
Jennifer Keddy led the Mustangs with a team-high 28 kills, while Kristina Graven had 18 kills, and both Megan McConnell and Catie Smith had seven.
On the defensive end, six Mustangs had double-figure digs. Lauren Law led all Mustangs with 27, both Shannon Garrett and Keddy had 19, Graven had 15, Smith had 11 and Molly Pon had 10.
