After combining to win the past three PAC 7 girls singles tennis titles, Abigail Will and Tori Troesch of San Luis Obispo High have left the door open for a new champion by entering this years tournament playing as a doubles team.
Will, who won in 2008 and 2009, and Troesch, last years champion, cruised through the first day at the PAC 7 championships Thursday on their home courts.
After receiving a bye in Round 1, they didnt drop a set through the quarters, winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0 in the next two rounds.
The two will face teammates India Hoffman and Darla Berkefeld today in the semifinals. Hoffman and Berkefeld won 6-0, 6-4 and then 6-2, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, they won a back-and-forth battle against Arroyo Grandes No. 4-seeded team of Maurisa Dominguez and Alexis Flood, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Todays other semifinal will feature Amber and Stephani Domako of Arroyo Grande playing against Annette Sousa and Laura Wong of Righetti.
On the singles side, No. 1 seed Sophie Whittle will face Caitlyn Brown of Pioneer Valley, and Atascaderos Amber Petersen will face Lauren Hayashi of Arroyo Grande.
Los Padres League finals
The No. 1 seed, Shelby Baumgartner of Templeton, won the singles title without losing a set.
The first two rounds of the tournament were played eight games to a set, and Baumgartner easily advanced 8-2, 8-0 to the semifinals, where she played Nipomos Lauren Kueffler, who was seeded fifth. Baumgartner swept 6-4, 6-3 into the finals, where she defeated Santa Ynezs Katie Voorhies 6-4, 6-3.
Kueffler won her first two matches 8-1, 8-1. However, she rebounded from the loss to Baumgartner to win the third-place match
6-2.
Gianna Abatti and Kelly Springford from Nipomo were the 10th seed in the doubles tournament. They advanced to the
quarterfinals with an 8-4 opening-round win, but lost 8-0 in the second round.
BOYS WATER POLO
San Luis Obispo 18, Pioneer Valley 5
Casey Blauer had three goals and Darren Paul, Ian Anderson, Skylar Brainard and Kenton Hauber scored two goals apiece as the Tigers (17-12, 7-5 PAC 7) cruised in their regular-season finale.
Garrett Cohune and Paul combined for nine saves in goal in the victory.
Arroyo Grande 12, St. Joseph 2
The Eagles (18-10, 10-2) wrapped up PAC 7 play by defeating the Knights and clinching the second playoff seed in the PAC 7.
Chandler Mankins made four saves and scored a goal. Clint Doucette made three saves while playing goalie in the other half. Nick Ruiz led the Eagles with three goals. Roberto Dessi netted two goals.
Righetti 16, Paso Robles 3
The Warriors (26-3, 12-0) ran the table undefeated in PAC 7 play with a road win over the Bearcats.
Will Boerger led Righetti with five goals.
Nipomo 13, Cabrillo 6
The Titans (19-4, 6-0) were in serious jeopardy of losing their first LPL game of the season in the LPL Tournament championship game as they trailed the Conquistadores 5-3 at halftime.
However, Nipomo outscore Cabrillo 10-1 in the second half to win the tournament.
Marc Baker led the Titans comeback with five goals. J.W. Dobbe added three scores, and Connor Cavazos and Brennan Bryant each had two goals.
Kirk Wilenius had 10 saves.
Santa Ynez 20, Morro Bay 10
Santa Ynez won the LPL Tournaments third-place game.
Garrett Rose led fourth-place Morro Bay with three goals as its season ended.
DJ Marcy and Marco Maffioli each scored two goals, while Juan Olabe Armendáriz, Anders Johnson and Kai Schwennicke each had one goal.
Armendáriz had six saves, and Mac Reinhart had five saves for Morro Bay (6-19, 2-5 LPL).
