Mary Booker has been trying for eight years to sell a winning lottery ticket for her boss.
Booker, who works at the One Stop Food and Convenience shop on Spring Street in Paso Robles, celebrated Wednesday after learning that the store had sold a Mega Millions jackpot ticket worth $78 million.
One Stop will get $390,000 for selling the winning ticket. Booker and others shared their elation with store owner Sarbjit “Sara” Atwal.
“I’m excited for my boss,” Booker said.
Atwal herself was hardly a study in calmness, nor would you expect her to be. She, too, was jubilant.
Atwal found out about the winning ticket Tuesday night. Now the only question is, who is holding it?
The lucky winner merely needs to sign the Lottery ticket and contact Lottery officials to claim the prize. On Wednesday, no one had yet come forward.
The winner of a Mega Millions jackpot has one year to claim the prize and up to 60 days to decide whether to opt for a lump-sum payment or 26 annual payments, state Lottery officials said.
The $1 ticket matched all six winning numbers — 39, 31, 46, 40, 27 and the Mega number 36 — in Tuesday night’s drawing.
Tuesday night’s jackpot marked the 17th Mega Millions jackpot to be sold in California, the second within the past month.
Mega Millions is played in California and 41 other states. Players pick five numbers from 1 to 56 plus a Mega number from 1 to 46.
Draw times are 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased from any of the more than 21,000 California Lottery retailers.
